if my heart was a compass you'd be north
Who: Yusuke Urameshi (
angerpoints) and Keiko Yukimura (
topoftheclass)
Where: The upstairs apartments at the Fighting Studio in Goldenrod City
When: Backdated to 12/6
Summary: After a month of being unconscious, Keiko finally wakes up, and Yusuke is there to welcome her back to the land of the living.
Rating: PG-PG-13, because geez, Yusuke, learn to watch your damn mouth.
Log:
[It's been four weeks since Keiko fell into a coma, and suffice to say, the stress of not knowing when he would see her up and at 'em again has taken its toll on Yusuke - not just emotionally and mentally, but physically as well.
Truth be told, Yusuke hadn't actually been that freaked out about her passing out at first. That's not to say he hadn't been alarmed when he initially realized she wasn't waking up - on the contrary, his immediate response to finding her unconscious and unresponsive had been to cuss up a storm, yank on some shoes and throw a coat over his pajamas, and then jet down to the nearest hospital to harangue a couple of the nurses into following him back to the Fighting Studio so they could check on her. It's just that once the nurses determined that she wasn't sick or anything, he was pretty quick to decide that Keiko must've just fallen into one of those weird-ass "memory comas" he'd heard people talking about - after all, if she wasn't sick, but she wasn't waking up either (no matter how roughly he shook her or how loudly he threatened to give her a buzz cut if she didn't open her friggin' eyes and stop screwing around - look, there are reasons why "gentle" is not a trait commonly attributed to him, okay), then that had to be the problem, and if it was, then all he'd have to do was wait for a week and she'd be back to normal. Of course, the relief that this thought brought to him didn't last; before he knew it, a week went by, and no matter how many times he checked in on her, Keiko still wouldn't wake up. Hell, out of desperation, he even tried not peeking into her room at all for a few days, just to see if maybe that stupid saying about how "a watched kettle never boils" would apply to this situation. No dice. She was out cold, and there was no telling when she would wake up again.
"Agitated" wouldn't even begin to describe the mood Yusuke's been in since then; it was probably a good thing that what time he didn't devote to sitting at Keiko's bedside had largely been spent by himself, because goddamn, was he unpleasant to be around. It certainly didn't help that he was already pretty stressed out to begin with, and had been ever since they came back from that freaky dream world castle back in October; as refreshing (and cathartic) as it'd been to have the opportunity to beat the shit out of monsters like he did before he arrived in Johto, all those nightmares he'd had over the course of the month about not being strong enough to defeat Sensui when he returned home had continued to weigh on his mind long after they were all returned to their bodies, leaving him so anxious and wound tight he could actually feel the strain of it all in his muscles. The situation with Keiko only exacerbated those symptoms; now not only was he so tense you could probably play him like a harp, he was exhausted too, having been expending most of his energy being ticked off about the king-sized shit a la mode sundae that life suddenly decided to hand him. It was so bad that he'd actually started nodding off while he was in her room keeping an eye on her - generally not for long stretches at a time, since one of their friends would usually come in and annoy him until he woke up again, but often enough that... well, he was starting to get used to walking around with a crick in his neck. (Seriously, it was a wonder he didn't wake up every stray dog in the city whenever he cracked it; the noise it made was terrible.)
Tonight was yet another night where Yusuke ended up going to sleep slouched down in the chair next to her bed instead of in his own room. There are a few tell-tale signs that he's been holed up in her room with her for a while now: the comic book on the floor, most likely having ended up down there when he dozed off while reading it; the beat-up sneakers sitting in the doorway; the empty water bottle, the ashtray, and the package of Lucky Chant cigarettes sitting on her bedside table. The lamp on the table is switched on, bathing the entire room in a warm light, and there's a thick smoky smell hanging in the air, no doubt thanks to his earlier decision to light up a couple of the cigarettes without bothering to crack open the window first. While Yusuke himself certainly isn't anywhere close to being alert, judging by the (really attractive) open-mouthed snoring he's doing, his Mightyena, Hana, is, and she's keeping close watch over both of the sleeping teenagers.
Like everyone else in the Hunter x Hakusho family lately, though, she seems pretty concerned about Keiko in particular. Sitting on the floor with her muzzle propped up on the surface of the bed, Hana stares intently at Keiko with big, glassy red eyes, her brow twitching with worry. When are you going to wake up, human??? Other human is sad without you 8(]

For a moment, she looks at the ceiling and rolls her eyes. Yusuke knows that her room is a smoke-free zone. No lighting up within ever unless he was willing to pay the really awful price of shopping, a movie, and sundaes at a restaurant to wrap the whole affair up. She feels fine, rested, a lot like when she woke up from the castle. That and the stiffness to her arms and back as she sits up gives her a moment to pause and it's only the slightest movement out of the corner of her eye that really makes her give the room a good look around and not ponder on that.
Hana is sitting there red eyes unblinking, her ears twitching the only sign that she's surprised to see Keiko awake. Of course, that's solved quickly as the Mightyena leaps on the bed and proceeds to cover her face in dog kisses. All of which leaves Keiko laughing and breathless, especially when her Vulpix joins in, when she finally manages to get them to sit down and let her recover, she gives them both a funny look. She used to Kurama being right there when she wakes up, that's normal since she can't bring herself to let her pokémon stay in their balls but Hana is a surprise visitor.
As if she knows what Keiko's thinking, the Mightyena nods her toward her trainer in a chair that wasn't there when she fell asleep. That explains a lot and that makes her wonder just what happened that Yusuke thought he needed to sit up next to her bed. She leans forward toward both Kurama and Hana and whispers:]
Should I wake him up?
[She'd let him sleep under normal circumstances. Partially because waking him up tends to be difficult when he passes out in strange places and partially because he looks ridiculously peaceful right now and she doesn't want to ruin that. But then she really wants to know why he's there too. Such a tough decision to make and she's already placed her feet on the floor to nudge him in the shoulder without really paying attention.]
Hey Yusuke?

[Yusuke's face screws up a little. It takes him a minute for him to start to wake up, and yet another minute for him to actually look at her - in fact, he ends up sitting up in his seat before he even manages to open his eyes, his movement slow, lethargic. With a yawn, he rubs his eyes with the backs of both hands, and then, finally, cracks them open and mumbles, in a slurred voice:]
All right, all right, 'm--
[--up, was how he intended to finish that statement, but alas, the word dies on his tongue the minute he registers what - or rather, who - he's looking at. For a long moment, Yusuke doesn't move or say anything; he simply sits there in his chair, bleary-eyed and gaping openly at her as if she'd just given him the biggest shock of his life. As his brain races to catch up with what's happening, he blinks several times, hard, just to make sure he's actually awake and not dreaming. Then, as soon as he's convinced that this is actually happening, Yusuke launches himself out of his chair and onto his feet, moving so suddenly and so forcefully that he actually stumbles a little on his way up. Good thing no one's ever accused him of being graceful.]
Keiko...!
[Yusuke doesn't know when exactly he reached out to take Keiko's hands in his, but by God, there they are, clutched so firmly that it's almost as if he's afraid she'll disappear on him if he dares to loosen his grip on her. His heart is racing. He usually doesn't appreciate having to deal with so much excitement within the first few minutes of waking up, but man, if this isn't the best damn thing he's woken up to in a long time, he doesn't know what is.]
You're awake! Are you okay? How're you feeling??

[She touches her cheek and starts wiping at it trying to get whatever is causing Yusuke to stare off. Did Killua sneak in during the night and draw all over her face? Not that it would make sense but if Yusuke did the drawing he’d be trying not to laugh instead of looking completely dumbfounded. She glances over at both Hana and Kurama hoping for some behavioral cue on their part to explain his shock. All she got in return was a bland look as Kurama rolling closer so his belly was up, looking for her to scratch it.
Not much help there.
Her gaze shoots back to Yusuke as he gets to his feet and for one horrifying moments she’s worried he’s going to tip straight into bed with her and their pokémon or possibly knock her out of bed in the process. When he doesn’t she quietly lets out a breath and stares at how he’s got a grip on her hands like she’s going to float away.]
Did I die?
[Yep she totally just jumped the proverbial shark but can you blame her the last time they had a moment anything like this she’d just kissed him back from the dead, so huh yeah, logical progression in her mind.]

[Goddamn, Fonzie, do you have rockets attached to those skis, or what? Yusuke's pretty confused by her leap of logic there, but he only spends a second or two staring at her with his brow furrowed before he shakes his head and lowers himself back down into his seat, his hands still clasped tightly around hers. There's a pretty strong chance that he's going to be embarrassed by all the touchy-feely stuff he's doing right now in a few minutes or so, but until then, well, whatever. He's too worried about her to give a damn about his reputation.]
No! No, you-- you've been asleep. For a month.
[Yusuke's voice and his facial expression are growing more and more incredulous by the second.]
What, you mean you can't tell?
no subject
With that in mind, she's having a bit of an issue believing she just slept a month away. Nevermind that she was stiff in places she'd rather not name, and that it took a miracle or life threatening situation to get Yusuke to willingly act like a boyfriend.
Okay so maybe it feels a little obvious that she was out a long time and she gives him a long look like she's expecting him to go "JUST KIDDING" but considering his expression that doesn't look like it's coming.]
It feels sort of like after the Nightmare thing.
[Only amplified by like a hundred. She shrugs as she speaks:]
Did I miss anything interesting? You didn't beat up Killua or anything did you?
no subject
No. I've been too worried about you to beat ANYBODY up.
[The admission slips out before he gets a chance to stop it, and there's a moment of silence, during which he stares her with wide-eyed surprise and embarrassment - the quintessential expression of "shit, I fucked up". Then, almost as if he'd been burned, he suddenly lets her hands go, and proceeds to lean back in his seat and redirect his gaze to a spot somewhere off to the side. Ah, yes, what a lovely dresser drawer that is over there! The craftsmanship is truly exquisite. Ahem.
(See? Told you he was going to get all red-faced over the touchy-feely stuff.)]
A-anyway... [It takes a bit of effort, but Yusuke manages to drag his eyes back over to Keiko. He doesn't quite look her in the eye, though - he just concentrates on a spot somewhere around her ear. His cheeks are a little pink.] You're sure you're okay? You don't feel... I dunno, sick or anything?
no subject
On the upside his outburst causes her to completely freeze and fall silent. Okay she wasn't expecting him to just let that spill out. She knows he cares but if he isn't careful she might get used to hearing him say it. And as the moment passes she almost seems to wilt especially once he let's go of her hands. The only difference in their otherwise similar reactions is that she can't stop staring at him, practically willing him to meet her gaze again.
She shakes her head and shrugs before answering him.]
No, I feel absolutely fine. [She tilts her head and waits a moment.] Are you okay? You seem...tense.
no subject
Yeah. I'm fine.
... 's just been a rough couple of weeks, is all.
[There. That was kind of honest, wasn't it? Don't get him wrong, he doesn't necessarily want to lie to her, but he's... neither great at talking about his feelings, nor is he very comfortable with talking about them. Hence why his preferred method of dealing with them is usually to punch 'em out or to avoid everyone until he feels better! Heck yeah, running away from your emotions. Too bad that's not really an option right now.]
no subject
Pushing the blankets off of her she swings her legs around so they’re over the edge of the bed as she speaks:]
Come on. Let’s get you back to your room.
[Which was basically code for let’s get you out of my room so you stop making it smell. But in this situation she really did mean that in the literal meaning too. It was about time Yusuke got a full night’s sleep in an actual bed. She’s just glad he didn’t manage to catch the flu or something while keeping watch over her unconscious form.]
Pretty sure it’s my turn to watch you sleep like a creeper.
[And with that she stands, albeit a little wobbly since it’s been a month but she catches herself and smiles at him and holds out a hand.]
no subject
"Creeper"? That's a nice thing to call the guy who was nice enough to keep an eye on you when you were too lazy to wake up for four weeks.
[At least I didn't try to kiss you while you were unconscious, is what he's tempted to add, just to tease her a little, but fortunately, he manages to resist. Teasing or not, he's never actually told Keiko that he'd done a lot of watching over her when he was ghost, and he's definitely never mentioned having been there when she almost kissed his empty shell of a body on the day of that fire, so he reckons doing so right now would just embarrass her. Maybe he'll wait until she hasn't just woken up from a coma to pop that one on her; for now, though, he's just going to get out of his seat - on his own, without accepting the hand that was offered to him - and shake his head a little at the idea of letting her drag him to his room.]
I'm fine. Really. All I meant was that I've been a little stressed out.
[Yusuke pauses and looks down at her, his mouth and his throat suddenly feeling a little dry. There was a pretty limited amount of space between the bed and the chair, and now that they're both on their feet, there's an even more limited amount of space between them, meaning that the two of them are now standing really, really close to each other. This wasn't by far the first time they've been this close - after all, they tend to literally get in each other's faces when they fight - but somehow, the fact that she's just woken up from a coma and he's missed her and they're standing around in her room and she's still in her bed clothes makes the proximity between them feel... a lot more intimate (and awkward) than it usually does.
It suddenly occurs to him that scooching away from her would probably be a good idea right about now. Somehow, it doesn't happen.]
no subject
[If she could control how long and when she was going to pass out she would have given some warning. She didn't really like the idea of making Yusuke or any of them worry. She did enough worrying on her own part to know how much that sucks. Which is why she's only the tiniest bit annoyed with him for smoking in her room and suffocating her unconscious body with second hand smoke. Give her a couple days she'll work up a good mad about it then.
For now however she'll settle for being amused that he felt the need to put some space between them. Giggling softly she picks up the ashtray from her bed side table and closes the distance between them once more to press the circular bit of plastic into his hand. The fact that she's in her pajamas not really bothering her. It wasn't like she'd slept only in a long t-shirt and her underwear. She was, as far as decency was concerned, fully covered and not likely to flash random bits of anatomy at him as she accompanied him back to his room.]
Next time, if there is a next time that is, don't feel like you need to sleep in the chair, okay? Dragging a futon in is perfectly acceptable.
