Obito had been all sorts of perked up by his talk with Rin a few days before about this, but that enthusiasm had faded as various things had kept him from actually approaching his cousin. None of them were particularly major, mostly other people drawing his attention before he could pull him aside, but it had led to him being a lot more nervous about this than when he'd resolved to just talk to him.

And might have accounted for his total lack of tact as he ambushed his cousin the second he was sure he was alone after training with his pokemon. "Cousin, I..."

Then he faltered right out again and just sort of slumped, looking at him.

Sasuke had just returned his pokemon to their balls when he heard Obito, pausing before clipping it onto his belt and facing him.

He didn't say anything right away, only humming to show that he knew Obito wanted to talk and that he was going to stay and listen. Obito had been kind of doing this for a while, though he still wasn't entirely sure of why.

The silence drew out for a long awkward moment, then he straightened up and just rushed his words. "Should I go?"

"If you want to."

He sighed, pausing and adding, "You've been trying to talk to me about something for days. Just say it."

"No. I mean. Should I -go-?" He made a wide gesture with one arm.

"Go?"

He blinked, staring at Obito and... Well, unsure of how to react.

"Why?"

Now that he'd started, it was easier to continue. "I just... get the impression sometimes that you might've been happier before I got here."

"Why would you think that?" Sasuke asked, his expression softening just the tiniest bit with his surprise at the statement.

"You just give me these... these uncomfortable faces. Like you want me to go away. Not even the 'you're annoying screw off' type either. I mean, I'm -used- to those. But the more polite 'how do i get him to leave me alone' thing and I don't know what to do about it. I've... I've always been awkward with family." He waved his hands through the air, then rubbed at the back of his neck, gaze drifting sideways and down.

"I mean, I get -why- and all, but, well, you wouldn't know any of that stuff."

For a long time he was silent, looking away from Obito as he just thought about it. After that he sighed, shaking his head and pocketing his hands.

"... I haven't had a family since I was seven. It's weird having one again."

"...And you told me why, which... just makes me even more awkward. I'm kinda afraid to say anything cause, well, I hate to say this but much as I loved em, most of the family was jerks to me so... I'm kinda worried you'll get man at me if I try to talk about em."

"I..."

He glanced away, closing his eyes and shaking his head. How did he feel about it? "I... I don't decide what you talk about. Talk about what you want."

"No, see, that's what we call the unhelpful face. Uncle Fugaku made that face all the time whenever I'd come to get the chibi and he was happy to see me. Not helpful." He waved his hands. "It means 'I don't know what to think about this development but I'm not sure if I like it or not'."

"That's because I don't know."

"Yes exactly! I like you. You need like, a million hugs, but I'm kinda paranoid if I mention Itachi you'll go all turtle on me, so I don't, and while Auntie Mikoto was nice and all, she was also pretty cranky sometimes, and uncle Fugaku. Gah. I mean, we were all over the village so it wasn't like, concentrated jerkface or anything, but seriously, I just, what the heck am I supposed to do?" He waved his arms and then bounded forward a step. "I don't want another black eye by hugging. Kakashi was a -master- at those."

He tensed the instant Itachi was mentioned, and then his parents to. It wasn't like he could blame him for thinking that way about his parents; his dad was probably the most stern man on the planet, and his mom was kind of scary sometimes (although he remembered that she was generally nice). He loved his parents to death, but Itachi...

Without realizing it his expression had become pained. It was a slight change, but Obito was likely able to pick up on it.

"... I don't know them like you knew them. You got to grow up at least a little with them. And you... At least you didn't die with everyone else. You died with honour."

"And on thinking about it I probably just deepened the stigma Kakashi had on his head when I died. The Uchiha as a whole didn't take kindly to the whole 'handing out eyeballs' thing." He snorted softly, then gave a sheepish grin. "Then again I was constantly harried about when I'd actually get the eyes working so..."

He was quiet for a long time as Obito was speaking, closing his eyes while he just thought things over.

"... Mom told me that, after someone important to him died, he stopped talking. And that he only started to again after I was born."

"That... mighta been me." He gave a sheepish smile. "If you mean the chibi anyway. Kid was just as hyper as me, got him into Dango. Your dad was soooo unimpressed."

"Is... That so."

[itsjustdust]

"Yeah, then again I wasn't exactly good at being impressive. No matter how many B-ranks I've done it always came back to 'have your Sharingan? No? Here, babysit since you're the only one who can make my son not be a useless lump'." He gave an exaggerated stern face as he said this.

"... He expected a lot. That never changed."

"Didn't figure it would. I mean, the family had it's nice folks but I was always considered a bit of a loser in-clan since I couldn't stay on top of my peer group. I mean, obviously can't compete with mister graduated academy at five. Couldn't hold my own against the kids in-clan who were all at least two years older. It just... sucked. Especially since my eyes didn't kick on until the day before I died so... yeah. Our family was filled with jerks."

"... Even if some of them were jerks, they were still family."

He closed his eyes, fists clenching in his pockets as the topic continued, "... I have to avenge them."

"See I was with you right up to that bit. I know for a fact that your mom was just as sunshine and flowers and pacifism as Itachi was when he was little, so where does this revenge go anywhere good? I mean. I get it. It'd be hard not to, but what good will it do you?"

"I... I couldn't do anything back then. I have to get stronger and do it. It won't bring them back but... I have to. As the last Uchiha, I have to."
