...[Someday Maka will learn to stop being surprised that there are, in fact, people she knows that are interested in what she talks about outside of academia.

Today is not that day.

She just stares at him as though she didn't hear him correctly for a few seconds, then shakes herself out of it when she reminds herself--Maka, this is your friend, don't stare at him like he's a purple people eater.]

Well...there's certain times of the months when...I don't know what happens, the barriers of this world grow a little thin and visitors start coming in. You get the abilities you had back home...sometimes Pokemon show up that aren't usually around. My ability is a sixth sense, so a Pumpkaboo approached me first and I sensed the soul inside of it--as in, there was the soul of the Pokemon, and another human soul inside of it.

I didn't know at the time since Pumpkaboo was a new Pokemon and there were no entries on it yet, but...it kinda felt like he thought he was supposed to come to me instead of...going wherever the afterlife is. My friend and I came up with the name Ghost Light for him and he stayed with us for a little while...but then those days ended and he was gone. My memories of that time turned pretty fuzzy, but they usually do for some reason, but I swear I saw him again when new Pokemon actually migrated here and a whole swarm of Pumpkaboo came back. So I officially adopted him and we've been traveling together since.

[All right, that took a little while to set up, but here comes the theory part--]

Pumpkaboo's entry in the Dex says that it carries souls to "where they belong"--meaning the afterlife--but Ghost Light still had the soul he was supposed to be taking over when I met him. I can't tell if he does have it now, but...maybe it's like his soul is getting muddled with the soul of the person from before? And while I'm not a guide to the afterlife, I imagine it's a pretty lonely duty, so he doesn't...like being left alone, or when people fight. People who fight often break up.

[That last bit sounds like she understands it more than on a surface level.]

...Anyway, that's just my thoughts on it.
