[The Carbinks are a little strange to him still, they speak of the Creator and their summoning from a far away region to do battle with evil men who would use those that made the land and sea for themselves, and N tries not to flinch when he hears it and he tells them that they're brave.
He's known his share of evil men; he's still never sure if he was one, once, and he wonders if it's telling that he doesn't like to think about it too much.
But the Carbinks are kind and eventually he becomes accustomed to being around them, with what they do with one another and what their hearts sound like, and when another sound joins theirs - not the voice of a Pokémon, but rather one of a human, articulations that don't need to be translated into words because they're already there - he freezes a little, eyes wide and staring into the space directly in front of him like he's fighting the instinctive urge to bolt.
He doesn't know where it comes from, and his eyes slide closed after a moment and once they have the feeling leaves him, and he's able to stand up and face her properly because he'd know that voice anywhere.
He still stares at her face a bit too openly, like a kid who's never been taught that it's rude to do that to people; his expressions are are still strange, vague things. But he smiles anyway.]
