As soon as Al bursts through the bush, he'll see why Wrath apparently stopped running. Because the earth suddenly sloped downwards into a considerably-sized ditch, lined from floor to rim with thick, slick vines. Which Wrath is lying face-down in, temporarily stunned by the spill he took.
It's hard to blame either of them for not looking where they were stepping-- the entire circumference of the pit is well-camouflaged by bushes and trees, so really only birds would have seen it coming.
