foolishwren: and every scar I have makes me who I am. (We were put here on earth to feel joy)

Hey, that's what questionably-moraled friends were for, right? <3

As Rise hesitated, Heather averted her gaze just slightly while still facing in Rise's direction, to show she was listening. She knew how much it sucked to be sitting there gulping for words, surrounded by expectant stares. So she rubbed Cujo's ears as an excuse not to be sending a creepy one-eyed stare (because creepy was sort of your default when you only had one thing to stare with) at Rise.

But when the idol got started, Heather couldn't help it.

She looked back up, eye wide. Not with '... what the hell is she talking about', but... with growing understanding. Fog and fighting something stronger and bigger than you could ever be...

In fact... could it...?

No. No, she was definitely talking about something totally different and she'd probably never even been to America, much less to a backwoods 'tourist' town, but the similarities were were just... lighting up in Heather's admittedly-shaky-right-now brain like connecting flights on an airport billboard.

When the idol got to the part about watching them die, Heather's throat tightened dangerously.

Oh, Rise...

Tearing up sort of hurt when you had black eyes, so Heather nipped that in the bud as best she could as she leaned over to wrap an arm around Rise's shoulders again. This time she made an effort for it to be firm, no matter how much it taxed her sore muscles.

"Well that's when you shoulda known it wasn't real, silly," she mumbled, in a tone that said very clearly that she DIDN'T think it was silly, and that this was just one of those stupid, offhanded, even ignorant-sounding comforting phrases that was only there to justify the hug, which stated plainly in its firmness that no matter how casual or stupid the words she was saying were, Heather understood. "I'd never have let some dumb chick kill me and make you go at it alone."

Sometime... not right now, she wasn't-- sure she could-- but sometime soon, she would tell Rise some things. Important things. This wasn't even something she had to make her mind up about-- it was just something she had to do now, couldn't even question. Not after hearing that. Hearing that Rise had gone through something like that.

Something so similar.
