If we stand as one, there's nothing to fear

Who: Konata, Yayoi and optionally anyone in Yayoi's party (Bokurano cast?)

Summary: Konata catches up with Yayoi, and follows up on a promise to teach her how to battle
Rating: R for graphic depictions of gross animal(?) cruelty and abuse. (i.e., a Pokemon "PG")
Log:

The sun had almost completely set when Konata finally caught up with Yayoi's party. She had actually almost passed them outright; it was only Kamikaze, the Pidgey she had sent to scout for rare Pokemon, that alerted her to the other group. Spotting Yayoi, Konata waved and moved in to join the procession.

"Ah- Konata! Hi!!" Yayoi waved back and padded over, an irate-looking Krabby trailing along behind her. "How did you get here so fast?" she asked, her eyes widened in surprise.

She KNEW that Konata was going through the routes at a quick pace- but after what the other girl had said about nearly wearing herself out- it was a pleasant surprise!

"I just walked. It's a lot faster moving alone than with a group." Konata recalled Kamikaze into his Pokeball, although her Dratini remained comfortably perched on her shoulders and behind her neck. She didn't look very tired, although she was moving her legs a little gingerly.

"I'm glad the sun is going down, it's really a problem. I should have picked up sunblock or something in Cherrygrove."

"That's true! And we've try not to walk too much when it gets TOO hot or sunny, since we've got a few sick people in our group..."

Yayoi trailed off, looking a little downcast. She shook herself out of it and- wait a second. Yayoi's gaze focuses to Konata's makeshift shawl-thing-Pokemon. "Um... is that a Dratini?"

"Sick people? Did something happen?" Konata remembered that Chie had gotten sick from being out in the rain...

"Yeah, this is my starter, Bahamut. He likes sunning himself during the day, although he'll probably go back into his pokeball soon."

"No, but... I think they were sick before they came here. We're going to find a hospital for them!" As far as Yayoi was concerned, there'll be one in at least ONE of the bigger cities up ahead; she didn't even want to consider the possibility that there wasn't.

"I talked to a few people with Dratinis- these Pokemon are all so graceful, aren't they? -- nice to meet you, Bahamut!" Yayoi added cheerfully- before threading her fingers together and looking at Konata with puppy dog eyes. "Um... can I pet him?"

Wow, those eyes are powerful. "Sure, go ahead." Konata leaned in and Bahamut leaned in further, eager for the attention.

"I heard that Goldenrod is a pretty big city; maybe they have something that can help your friends there?"

"Eheheh... thank you!" Yayoi pet the little dragon Pokemon on the head, smiling like she'd been given the key to utopia itself. Her Krabby, meanwhile, sidled up next to her trainer and began eying Bahamut warily, not sure what to make of this strange new creature.

"That's what we heard, too! But we're hoping that there's a clinic or something in Violet, too," Yayoi replied, switching over to scratch behind Bahamut's ears/frills.

"Well, even if there isn't a clinic, it'll be good to be able to sit down and relax there for a bit." Bahamut purred in a strange, musical voice, clearly thrilled at Yayoi's interest.

"So, how's Iori doing? Have you two been getting along?"

"Yup, I'm really looking forward to it! I mean, everyone's already tired and sweaty, and we aren't even halfway there yet..." Yayoi gave a start at Bahamut's purring- and then giggled, scratching the Dratini under her chin. "Good girl, good girl!"

Konata's question gave Yayoi a moment of confusion before she remembered WHICH Iori they were talking about. "Ah... um, Iori still snaps at me sometimes, but I'll keep trying my hardest to be friends with her!"

The Krabby turned away from her trainer with a huff, her pincers clacking fitfully. Not TOO different from her namesake, it seems.

"Bahamut's a he, actually. Or so says the Pokegear, it's not like I can actually tell.

"So, did you still want to learn about attack types?"

"Really!? Ah, um, sorry! I didn't mean to call you a girl!!" Yayoi gave the Dratini an apologetic pat on the head.

"Attack types..." Yayoi furrowed her brow and gulped, looking as if she was mentally steeling herself for an upcoming battle. "Um, um, if you could, please!"

"It's okay, it's not that hard. Basically, each Pokemon has either one, or two types. The types are, like, Normal, Flying, Grass, Fire, Water, Electric, Ground, Rock, Poison, Psychic, Fighting, Dragon... there might be more, those are only the ones I can remember off the top of my head. And each attack has exactly one type, from the same list.

"Each type has strengths and weaknesses. For instance, Fire-type Pokemon are weak to Water-type attacks. Water-types are weak to Grass-type attacks. And Grass-types are weak to Fire-type attacks.

"Understand so far?"

"O-Okay, um... one or two types, made up of, um, um..." Yayoi trailed off and listened intently, and nodded after a moment. "I-I think so!" It didn't sound THAT hard so far!

... Skeptical Kona is skeptical. "Anyway, basically, all you have to do is use a Pokemon that defends well against the enemy's attacks, and has attacks that the enemy doesn't defend well against.

"Krabby is physically tough and it has water attacks, so it's great against rock types. Rock is weak against water. So if you have your Krabby use Bubblebeam or something, you might be able to beat rock types even if they look really strong."

"Okay, um- aaaaah!!" Yayoi exclaimed suddenly, her eyes widening in HORRIFIED REALIZATION.

"But, but, Iori is also a crab-type, so her shell might end up getting cracked by rocks! Like how otters try to get to the meat in the middle! That'll be really bad!!"

... Konata's skepticism is probably very well-founded.

Oh, dear. "... There is no crab type. Iori is just water type, I think."

There's a moment of silence.

"... huh? Um, does that mean Iori isn't really a crab?"

"N-- No, it just means 'crab' isn't one of the types. There are only so many. Like between ten and twenty, I think."

"Uuuu..." Yayoi held the top of her head as if that would help descramble her thoughts. "So that means... she's just a crab that happens to be a water-type, right?" she asked with less and less confidence.

"Right. There's crab Pokemon, seal Pokemon, starfish Pokemon and fish Pokemon, but they're all Water type."

Yayoi brightened up immediately. "Ah... I think I might get it now! Everything that lives in an ocean or a pond or a river..."

She mulled this over. "And they can all eat fire, right?"

"Well, I don't know if they EAT it, but they're really strong against fire types. Water type resists fire attacks, so they take less damage... and water attacks do extra damage against fire types. So if you use water against a fire type, you're likely to win."

"Okay, and, um... water douses fire, which burns grass, which drinks water, right? It's a little like rock-paper-scissors, then!"

Yayoi let out a sigh of relief. So all of this wasn't NEARLY as complicated as she thought it would be! "What about the other types?"

"Well, I don't remember all of them exactly. I think there's a list in the trainer guide in your backpack. But, for instance... water and grass both erode rock, but rock resists fire. Flying is immune to ground. Bugs eat grass. Psychic is strong against fighting...

"Oh, yeah, and normal type and ghost type are immune to each other. That's a bit of a weird one, but it's important to remember."

"Really? Um..." Yayoi pulled the trainer guide out of her backpack and took a moment to find the appropriate page.

She stared at the list. Then she looked up and stared at Konata as the other girl rattled off a slew of strengths and weaknesses.

She looked back at the list. Looked back up.

"... bugs eat grass?"
