While never a good idea to wander away from a campsite without first letting the others know where you were going. It seemed nearly impossible to get lost out here. The trees were sparse and the trail was well marked. Coming to the fork in the road offered an interesting choice. Left to Violet City and the known quantity that was that small town or right… towards the unknown. Of course he choose to explore the direction he had never traveled before.
His group of four Pokemon trailed along behind him playing with the rocks along the pathway or tussling in the grass lining the dirt road. Carrera very nearly ran into Eagle’s feet when he stopped suddenly in the middle of the road.

“Is that a cave?” He spoke mostly to himself but it was loud enough to gain the attention of the Pokemon caravan behind him.

Eagle knelt down to peer inside. It was dark but very large inside… almost as if it had been made for people to enter. The urge to explore it was very enticing.

Bakura, for his part, had been led on a merry chase as Amane and Fuushi went seeking more fights and had similarly gotten a bit far from camp. He had spotted Eagle and had trailed after, curious, but not wanting to intrude.

That was until his friend reached the cave.

"Heeeeh, I wonder what's in there!" he exclaimed, forgetting about that whole pseudo stalking thing he had been doing.

Instantly found out by the outburst, Eagle can’t help but laugh at Bakura’s enthusiasm… and his own mirrored thoughts.

“I was just wondering the same thing!” Called out, since he knew Bakura was around some where but he wasn’t quite sure just where he had secreted himself.

There really was only one way to find out though. Eagle stood and very carefully, making sure there was ground beneath his feet before he stepped forward, made his way into the opening of the cave. It really only became darker inside. Apparently there was no ready source of light here.

Bakura made his way to the entrance, peeking in. "Aaaa, it's really dark! I wish I'd brought my torch with me! It's back at the camp..." he lamented. If Eagle went much further, he'd be to far in shadow to even be seen!

The rest of Bakura's party had arrived, Gollum peering in from his side before lurching in to stand by Eagle, looking up at him.

“I wonder if we could make a torch with some of the wood outside and Carre…”

With that he slips on the damp moist floor. He nearly catches himself before disappearing into the darkness with a loud ‘thunk’ noise.

"EAGLE!" Bakura hurried forward, peering into the dark. He couldn't see a thing... "Are you okay?!"

“It’s alright Bakura, I’m fine!”

Eagle couldn’t see where he but it was pretty obvious from the hard surface he was sitting on that seemed to stretch out in all directions that he was in no immediate danger of falling any further.

“Be careful, It is a little slippery up there,” As if that wasn’t obvious from his own fall he still felt the need to warn Bakura.

Bakura gave a deep sigh of relief. "Is it easier to see when you're inside?" he asked, very cautiously inching forward. He nearly stumbled himself when his leg brushed against something, but there was just enough light to reflect off Gollum's enormous gem-eyes. "Bet you can see fine, eh?" he smiled at his pokemon.

Gollum nodded, taking hold of Bakura's pant leg and tugging him forward to where Eagle was.

“I think is actually gets darker the further inside you go. I can’t see anything at all.”

Even the faint glow of the entryway was some how obscured. That was strange since he shouldn’t have been that far away from it. Maybe it was another magical barrier… like the cliffs that could not be climbed.

By the time Bakura arrived Eagle was already standing and brushing off his pants. While he couldn’t see that there was anything on them it was a pretty safe assumption that there would be something there.

“In a place as dark as this it makes you wonder what kinds of Pokemon would like to live here.”

"Maybe ones like Gollum?" Bakura asked with a smile, putting a hand on his pokemon's head. "Or Zoku, since he hates the light. Or really any of mine, except Annin!" he laughed, earning a small "Piii" from the plant pokemon. "Or Vasuki, since he's more of a water dragon than a cave dragon!"

“It is tempting to go in further just to see what might be in here… but then I am not sure we could actually see anything.”

What a shame to find a cave and not be able to explore it just due to the lack of a flashlight. Eagle is about to suggest turning around and trying to find the exit when a grating sound catches his ear. It sounded like rock grinding against rock. There was something moving around in the darkness.

Bakura went still, turning towards the sound as if he could hear it. "Something there...?" he asked in a quiet voice.

The graveling sound increases as if what ever it is has just moved to block the exit.

“It must be a Pokemon?” Eagle asked wishing he had some way to see in the dark and not yet aware of Gollum’s special talent that would enable the Pokemon to see the Geodude hopping around back there.

Oh this was an uneasily familiar situation.... Bakura's hand went to his chest before remembering that the Ring wasn't with him.

And he had other means to deal with something trying to trap them in a cave.

"Gollum, can you see it?" he near whispered, hand still on his pokemon's head. A nod. "A pokemon?" Another nod, prompting a relieved sigh. "Gollum says it is."

“Gollum can see in the dark?” There was some good news! “Then maybe we can just ask it to move out of the way?” This was unlikely since it was a wild Pokemon and not a domestic one… but it was worth a try Eagle decided as he did just that. Asking the Geodude if he wouldn’t move to one side so they could go back out the way they had come in.

The answer was a fist hitting the floor and a resounding, “Dude!”

"Un, he lead me to where you fell before," Bakura explained.

Well. Diplomacy wasn't going to work. "Think you can take care of it?" he asked his pokemon softly. Another nod. "Thank you," he smiled, patting the pokemon on the head appreciatively. "Gollum! Attack with Scratch!"

It’s not very effective… but it still manages to injure the Geodude enough to make it really mad! It charges across the cave at the small group trying to tackle anyone who gets in his way. While it was attacking though it was out of the way.

Gollum gets out in front before it can get close, giving a sound like a hiss.

"Gollum!" Bakura exclaimed, more concerned for his pokemon than the exit. There was no point to getting out if it meant leaving someone behind! "Use Night Shade!"

The Geodude stops in mid-tackle… confused by the Nightshade attack. It stops, blinks, and then as the attack fully connects collapses into a little rock pile. It has been successfully defeated by the higher level Gollum.

“Congratulations. It sounds like you won,” Eagle decides after a while when he no longer hears the strange gravel scraping sound.

"You did it, Gollum!" Bakura cheered happily, crouching down to give his pokemon a hug when he came back over. "We should probably get back out, especially since your group is still outside, aren't they?" he smiled towards where he was pretty sure Eagle was.

“If Gollum will be kind enough to lead us back out again?” Asked with a smile… which only Gollum would be able to see anyway.

But, before Eagle makes a move to leave he does use his PokeDex to find out just what kind of Pokemon that was, “So now we know there are Geodude in this dark cave.”

"He will," Bakura smiled after Gollum nodded. "And pretty low level since it was just two hits to take it out. Doesn't look like Gollum too any damage either." For which Bakura was very thankful. He really hated it when his pokemon got hurt...

He stood up again, Gollum, latching on to his pant leg to tug him to daylight again. "This way, Eagle!"

It was good to… er see… Bakura acting so confident. Eagle some times worried about that so even if he was a little annoyed at himself for allowing a situation like this to occur in the first place at least something good had come out of it.

Eagle had these kinds of thoughts while following the sound of Gollum and Bakura making their way to the exit. It really was the only way to keep up with them. Fortunately coming out of the cave seemed easier than going in had been. It was still slippery, but everyone was well aware of that and the footing was easier to find.

“I suppose that is why they keep the HM at the top of Sprout Tower…” Said to himself again. That tower was becoming even more interesting due to this incident.

If there was one things Bakura had (mostly) learned in Duelist Kingdom, it was to have (some) confidence in his friends. And compared to the odds his friends normally went up against, something like this? This was nothing. No person sealing them in the cave, no long maze, no impossible duel, no trick to find the exit, no--

...

"Hrm?" Bakura asked, letting the remembrance drop, curious what Eagle meant. What did this cave have to do with that tower?

Eagle doesn't know any of that history though. So for him it was a good thing to learn about Bakura.

“Oh, you heard that?” He chuckled before answering, it was silly to be caught talking to yourself all of the time. “There is am HM called Flash in Sprout Tower. You have to defeat the trainer there in order to win it, but I believe that move can then be taught to Pokemon in order to better navigate this cave.”

Someday, Bakura would have to tell him of the insanity that was Duelist Kingdom.

... maybe not. But it would make a good campfire story at any rate!

and silly Eagle, if you don't want to be heard, don't talk to yourself so close to others!

"Heeeh, really? So after we defeat the tower, we can come back and properly explore it!"
