♘ finding answers is forgetting all of the questions we call home

Who: [livejournal.com profile] wingless_falcon & [livejournal.com profile] usedeverything
Where: Goldenrod City - Souji's Breeding Centre
When: Backdated to 6/24/2011 - Early Morning
Summary: There's still unresolved issues and questions concerning about a certain visitor that Merlin has gotten during that forgotten weekend. Best way is to approach Souji about it, but it's surprising when some of these issues seem shockingly familiar.
Rating: PG-13 at most
Log:
[ These past few days have been a terribly busy day, between having everyone's souls return to the three-way birthday party. It's been tiring and a complete mess between a swarm of emotions; nervousness, relief, joy, regret, and so much in just the span of a week. ]

[ However, everything has calmed back down to the way it has been, just another slice of life. Souji can't say he hasn't missed it. He rather try to forget everything, but easier said than done. After all, it's times like these when he's alone that he can dwell on thoughts he really shouldn't be. ]

[ Standing in the kitchen of the house (he has always found it quite convenient that Goldenrod has had a house which is connected to a centre, making the move from home to work and vice-versa so much easier), he pours himself a cup of coffee. This time, he doesn't go to the cafe to buy them. After all, he doesn't think Yosuke will even be awake this early in the morning, so this is home-made. ]

[ He places the pot back where it belongs and opens the fridge to take out the milk, to mix it in. He adds a considerable amount before placing the carton back. He takes a sip, finding it well to his tastes, slowly helping him feel more awake. Taking another one, he pulls out the chair for the dining table and sits himself down. No one should really be awake at this point in the morning, after how tired everyone must be. So, he'll have some time to think for himself. ]

[ There's a lot to think about, after all. ]

[The soft sounds coming from the kitchen draw Merlin out of his room, of course. Nightmares have been taking hold of him every time he closes his eyes, and he knows better than to try sleeping again on these rare nights.

Somehow, he isn't too surprised to see that Souji is awake.]

Couldn't sleep? [The smile he offers his friend is just a bit strained, but he's much more awake now. Finding Souji like this, in the quiet of the night, reminds Merlin of other things he's left unsaid during the impromptu journey to the Ice Path.]
dragonspeak: (Please don't think any differently of me)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-07-08 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Same. [He joins Souji at the table, studying him before he continues quietly.] I have nightmares...sometimes.

[Folding his hands together on the table, he smiles wryly.] Not much use trying to sleep after that, I'm afraid.
dragonspeak: (Do you really believe that?)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-07-10 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why not. [He pauses, and backtracks.] Tea, perhaps.
dragonspeak: (I can understand how you feel)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-07-22 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Not too often. [He folds his hands together, looking down at them.] A few dreams here and there...

Especially after those three-day gaps.
dragonspeak: (When you're king--you can change that)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-07-22 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Actually... [Merlin trails off, sitting up as his gaze sharpens.] I do. The memory's a bit fuzzy, but I remember the gist of it.

[Pause] Souji...why are the others convinced you don't have a Shadow?
dragonspeak: (You've changed him forever)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-03 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Rise told me a while ago. Then...those three days happened. Well, again.

The first time, I remember seeing someone from home. [He toys with the dragon ring on his left thumb, glancing down at it.] This time, I saw you. Or...he looked like you, at first. Then I saw his eyes.
dragonspeak: (There must be something I can do)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-03 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
He had a lot to say. [Merlin smiles tightly, remembering the near-hysterical chattiness that had contrasted Souji's usual calm. He leans forward intently.]

Mostly...that you never had a choice, and that you were tired of shouldering everyone's burdens.
dragonspeak: (I'm sorry. I shouldn't have)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-03 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? [He glances up at Souji, taking note of his friend's reaction.] That's not what it sounds like.

I think there's some truth to what the Shadows say, and how they act as...you. I mean, if everything they say are lies, then you, Rise, and the others wouldn't be so affected by them.
dragonspeak: (I had a RIGHT to know)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
No. [Merlin smiles wryly, pressing the ring more insistently until it's sure to leave a faint imprint on his finger.]

I think you're tired, but you can't admit it. Or you won't let yourself admit it because you're their Leader, their Sensei, their Partner, or whatever else the others call you. I think you're afraid to rest because something might happen when you're taking time for yourself and that would mean you weren't there for them when they needed you. Because that would mean you failed them, wouldn't it?

[Still tense, Merlin leans back into the chair, watching Souji's expression like a hawk.] That's what I think.
dragonspeak: (Someone else always gets the credit)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-04 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Right. [Despite his best efforts, his voice goes just slightly dry.] Because being pulled into a situation like yours without knowledge means you had a choice in the matter, right?

[Now he crosses his arms over his chest, his smile twisting oddly.] Even if you accepted it eventually, there's only so much you can take. It gets...lonely.
dragonspeak: (Glad I could help)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-04 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...lonely. Isn't it?

[Another quirk of the lips.] Hiding a part of yourself because you're not sure if your friends would accept it or not. [His voice is little more than a whisper at this point.] You don't think you can show them everything and still be their Leader.

dragonspeak: (But they're YOUR boots)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-04 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
[For a second, Merlin hears another voice, sees another face just as incredulous as Souji's--"How come you're so knowledgeable?"

It's with no small amount of irony that he shrugs and says with a grin: ]
I read a book.
dragonspeak: (We'll figure something out)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-04 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Merlin's first instinct is to shy away from the question, draw Souji's attention elsewhere, but he quickly clamps it down. Really, he'd known what he was leaving himself open to by using the words he did.]

Maybe. [He meets Souji's gaze, tilting his head.] Would it help if I said "yes"?
dragonspeak: (I can understand how you feel)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-04 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Seeing Souji's expectant look, Merlin props his cheek against his hand, wondering where to start. He can't remember the last time he's talked to anyone about...well, anything, really. Gaius? While his mentor knew nearly everything, there were some things Merlin didn't think Gaius really understood.]

From what it sounds like, you ended up being in the middle of things without even realising it. I guess you could say it was the same for me.

You know I care for Arthur...a lot now, but it wasn't always like that. He's much better now, but he was, well, a complete arse when I first met him. Being told you're destined to help a bully like that become the greatest king in Albion can be a bit of a shock right after that. [He pauses.] Whatever that destiny was, I didn't want a part of it. Not with him.
dragonspeak: (A blade forged on a dragon's breath)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-05 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to get out of it. [Merlin's shoulders hunch slightly.] But Kilgharrah was right; you can't escape destiny. I ended up saving Arthur at the first banquet without thinking and... [He shrugs.]

At first it was because Arthur would, according to legend, lift the ban and bring magic back to Camelot. Then, I saw that he wasn't as much of a bully as a stupidly noble arse, and it was difficult not to protect him after that.

[After a long silence, Merlin continues softly.] I follow him, carry out my duties to him willingly now, but sometimes I can't help but wonder...
dragonspeak: (I'm NOT an idiot--why can't he see that?)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-13 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
You know. If things could have been...different. [Gods, this is so difficult to say. Merlin rubs at his forehead tiredly.]

If I ever had a choice at all.
dragonspeak: (There was magic--I could feel it)

[personal profile] dragonspeak 2011-08-20 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
...no. [At this point, Merlin draws his legs up onto the chair, tucking his chin over his knees.] I don't think I could just...leave it be. Let people get hurt if I could do anything to help.

But even knowing that...everything's just so convenient, you know? [The laugh that escapes him is dry and brittle.] I always thought there was something more to me having strong magic, always wanted there to be something that only I was destined for. I guess I got my wish.
