Summary: Riku takes Xion out to catch a Scyther in order to cheer her up

[Riku isn't always the nicest guy. He has his arrogant and selfish moments. However, beneath his rough exterior, he does care for his friends. That's why he wouldn't stand for Xion to stay down for very long. So what's his solution?

Taking her out to expand her team. In this case, a Scyther, so she can get a Scizor and kick some butt. Whether or not they'll be successful is another story entirely.

If nothing else, he's got some of his team for backup, so once they reach their destination, he'll turn her attention to Xion, pointing over at the tall grass.]

So, you ready for this?

[ Xion stops beside Riku, with Axel the Typhlosion trailing behind her. It was nice of Riku for offering to do this with her, but she still hopes she isn't inconveniencing him.

She looks to the tall grass. Thankfully, the staff gave her a pouch for the twenty Sports Balls she's now carrying as she still couldn't really use her right arm. Riku noticed the state of her injuries, but thankfully didn't act on them... yet.

She nods. ]

So I only need to catch one?

That's right.

[He nods, placing one hand on his hip.]

They're pretty fast, so you'll want to make the first move. Axel should be able to handle it, though.

[ She gives another nod and slowly walks into the tall grass. Axel follows closely, watching for any movement with a cautious eye. ]

Have you won the Bug Contest before, Riku? [ She poses the question, but her gaze is looking elsewhere. ]

[He shakes his head. He's heard about it, but when he did want to compete, it was already too late.]

Nah. Already had a Scyther by the time the contests started up again.

I see. [ She stops, and Axel does so with her. On her right, there's a... no, it's not a Scyther, but a Pinsir scurrying along. She decides to leave it alone while Axel watches that one warily. ]

Hopefully I can find a good one... even if I don't win.

Well, even if you don't win, you'll come out of here with a good Pokémon. I think that's a good enough prize, personally.

[But the Department Store has most of the prizes for the contest, anyway. And while Riku isn't actively participating, he's keeping his eyes peeled for any giant, green bugs.]

That's true... huh?

[ She stops. Oh... look! There's a Scyther up ahead! Maybe she can sneak up on it... ]

[In that case, Riku will stop dead in his tracks, quietly eying the Scyther. C'mon, Xion! Go get it!]

[ She creeps on closer, and closer... But the rustling grass makes the Scyther turn towards her and... RAWR! Xion stops and Axel moves forward, roaring back. ]

I should weaken it as if I'm catching a normal Pokemon, right?

Yeah. If you wanted to, you could just knock it out and then catch it.

[That's usually what he does, that way he doesn't have to worry about the Pokémon putting up a fight.]

[ She pauses at that. No, she won't go that far... ]

Axel, use Ember!

[ Puffs! Gotta go slow this time, since he has type and level advantage. ]

[Oh, Xion. You're so much more sympathetic to Pokémon than Riku. For now, he'll just sit back and watch the fireworks.]

[ The Scyther cries out! It's Super Effective! Oh, but it's standing still, and tries to Slash at Axel. He grunts in his own way, but it doesn't hurt him much. ]

Axel, use Tackle!

[ Looks like it's getting weak! ]

[Whew, that's a relief! And Riku looks genuinely impressed.

Even if he'd probably just go for a Blast Burn over Tackles.]

[ ... oh, Riku. Shush. Axel does as he's told, knocking down the Scyther. It's very weak and staggering now, so Xion think it's a perfect time to throw a Sports Ball.

Hit!

Wiggle...

Wiggle...

Flash!

Xion makes a noise of exasperation. ] Axel, hold it off!

[ She's not going to beat it down to the point of exhaustion. She's going to try another Sports Ball. ]

[Well, hopefully she'll get it this time! Darn those Scythers and their ability to bust loose.]

[ Axel jumps off as soon as the Ball makes contact with the Scyther and whirls it inside. Bounce!

Wiggle...

Wiggle...

...?

Click!

Axel roars in triumph! Xion jumps a bit in her spot before turning to Riku. ]

I got it!

Not bad. Took a bit of work, but I'm impressed.

[Plus, it's good to see her in such a good mood.]

[ She runs to pick up the Sports Ball, then heads back to Riku. Stares at the Sports Ball for a moment, then seems to just... pause in thought before looking back up at her friend. ]

Um, so what now? Do I try to catch more or wait for the Contest to end?

[He shakes his head and shrugs.]

Nah, no need to keep at it unless you want to.

I've actually never done something like this before. [ Pauses. ] Could we stay until they call us up?

[ Axel moseys over and stares at Riku, almost daring him to say "no." ]

[Yeah, yeah, mister big beasty. Riku nods.]

Might as well.

[ She smiles and nods in thanks before looking around... and finding a bench. She moseys over to it and sits down with a sigh, waiting for Riku to join her, too. Axel takes his spot beside the bench, closest to the end Xion is sitting on. ]

[Doesn't take long for Riku to mosey on over to the bench. He'll plop down and lean back, just chilling.]

[ And after a moment of companionable silence... ]

Thank you for this, Riku. [ She holds up the Sports Ball like a trophy. ]

Hey, no need to thank me. It's the least I could do.

[Especially since she was feeling down.]

[ She starts swinging her feet to-and-fro as they wait for other contestants to catch up and finish. ]

I don't think I've asked, but how long have you been in Johto now?
