hughes 001 † hunting for information

Who: Hughes & Mustang
Where: Goldenrod? Yes, Goldenrod.
When: Day after the train incident; so Nov 24th, some time during the afternoonish
Summary: Hughes learned some stuff about his future from Kimblee, and he wants a bit more information
Rating: PG? PG-13 at most
Log:

It's been a few days since his arrival here, and Maes is slowly beginning to get used to the hang of things. He'd actually missed the whole train fiasco, in favor of doing more research about this strange new land and those creatures called "Pokemon." (That, and the fact that he'd never actually gotten any sort of memo about the operation. Which, he counted as a good thing. Maybe those Rockets forgot who he was, and he could just slip through the system without having to really worry about anything.)

Though, he'd definitely been close enough to experience part of that plot, simply by proxy. Now he understood what Kimblee had been so cryptic about. Team Rocket... was definitely not to be taken lightly. And they were no doubt made all the more dangerous with the help of Kimblee.

But this turn of events had also left Maes with an unsettling feeling. Everything Kimblee had said to him thus far had been true. Which meant that there was less and less of a chance that he'd been lying about Maes' death. Even still, it wasn't something that Maes was altogether ready to just accept, yet.

He'd been putting off asking anyone, simply because, well, he wasn't sure he wanted to open up that bag. It was certainly not something he'd want to discuss with the Elrics or Winry. And he didn't know most of the other Amestrians here well enough to just approach them with a casual, "hey, since you already know a bit about me, tell me, am I dead?"

So it just left Roy. And Maes wasn't too excited about that, either. If he had died, then... knowing Roy, he imagined it wasn't something the man would readily want to talk about. Particularly not with the dead person himself. But, after holding off for a few days, the question simply needed to be answered. He needed to know. After all, how was he supposed to accomplish anything dead? He kept thinking to himself, maybe -- just maybe -- if he knew the details, he could rush back home and point his future in another direction: Not leave his wife without a husband, his daughter without a father, and not break his promise to Roy to see him to the top. (Though, it did seem that Roy was doing quite well on his own, from the little information Maes had gleaned from Kimblee. This, at least, was good news.)

If nothing else, he wanted to make sure his family was well taken care of after his death. He wanted to hear from Roy -- one of the people he trusted most in the world -- that his wife was doing alright, and that little Elicia was still happy and unharmed.

Even with all of his determination, when he spots Roy at their agreed upon meeting place, Maes suddenly felt a wave of second guesses. What if he didn't want to know? What if Roy wouldn't talk about it? It felt wrong to ask Roy to talk about the death of a friend.

He approaches with shoulder slumped and manages an uncharacteristically unenthusiastic wave.

"Yo."

[Roy was looking pretty exhausted as he approached. It wasn't much of a surprise; after all, he had been on the train to Saffron City and gotten into fights with Archer, Kimblee, and Russia. He may have had no part in defusing the bomb, but trying to fight in such a confined space while trying to protect the people who were unable to protect themselves was a challenge in and of itself.

And now, thanks to Hughes, he'd had to catch an early train back to Goldenrod City, foregoing two of the three free nights he had earned back in Saffron. And, of course, there was also factored into that Roy's surprise when he learned that Hughes had arrived in Goldenrod City, not Mahogany Town like Winry, Archer, and Kimblee had.

But, at any rate, here he was. He didn't look in the best of shape, but he made it. And it was a chance to see his old best friend in person again -- it had been about two years, give or take a few months, since he'd had that pleasure (not counting Envy shapeshifting into him).]

Good to see you in person again, Hughes. But was this really so urgent that I had to get an early train back here from Saffron to talk to you?

Nah, you don't need to do that. Not much point now. I need to get back on track with the gym challenge, anyway.

[He stops talking to let Hughes finish...]

Yeah, that was one hell of a plan they concocted, all right. It might have even worked if the trainers on board had either less backbone or weaker Pokémon. Still, some of the grunts managed to claim some booty, from the sound of it.

You won't mind keeping an eye out for the stolen Pokémon, will you?

[Roy's expression hardens. He hopes that Hughes isn't getting at what he thinks he's getting at. If he is, he's going to throttle Kimblee the next time he meets him.]

...Yes, that's true. That's the case with the Elric brothers -- they're both from different points in time.

[Which is why he uses the Elrics as an example, rather than himself -- even though he's further along than anybody else from Amestris here right now.]

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
We're all doing well. Me, the Elrics, the Armstrongs, Gracia, Elicia...

...You know, don't you?

[Roy is perceptive -- too perceptive, perhaps. Surely Hughes was prepared for the possibility that he'd figure out what he was getting at.]

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[Yep. Roy was going to have to strangle Kimblee.]

He was never one for mercy, that's for sure.

...That was almost two years ago for me back home. A lot's happened, but everything turns out...

[He pauses. He can't say happily necessarily, because they did have to make sacrifices along the way. And not just Hughes -- many good men were lost, like Buccaneer and one of Ling's bodyguards.]

...turns out the best we could manage in the end. Amestris is safe now, and Ishval is being rebuilt.

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
...Not quite. I've been promoted, but I'm just a brigadier general right now. Grumman is the current Fuhrer.

[That causes Roy's gaze to divert itself. That kind of look isn't something he wants to see from him.]

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[This look, Hughes. Just...this look.]

Just what the hell do you take me for? You really think I'd abandon my honor?

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-26 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
LOOK, MY LOVE LIFE IS MY BUSINESS, OKAY?!

[To be fair, the only reason why Roy isn't married is the military's rule against fraternization.]

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I am PERFECTLY HAPPY with my progress, thank you very much!

[Oh, most likely.]

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Dammit. Couldn't Johto have been at least kind enough to separate him from that infernal wallet?]

Hughes, I have seen that photo more times than I can count. You do NOT have to brandish it!

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-27 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Looks like he's not getting the message. As usual. Roy can't think of anything else to say, so he just. Facepalms.]

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-28 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Roy seizes the topic change. Anything to get him off his rambling about his family.]

I've averaged about one a month. I've got five now, and will be heading back to Olivine City to claim my sixth soon.

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-28 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If we have to, then we have to. That's all there is to it.

[A shrug. He seems pretty confident that he could put on such an act.]

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never had a problem with them...provided you make sure to lock the message to the recipient. And don't let anyone nearby overhear you, naturally.

[identity profile] king-of-flames.livejournal.com 2011-11-29 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing problematic, anyway. I don't think you'd have made lieutenant colonel otherwise.
