SUMMARY: What happens when you get a bunch of ancient heroes together to drink?
RATING: PG13+ for drinking shenanigans and possibly violence. It's possible with this crowd.
LOG:

It had been impossible to secure a place for them to drink on their own. A world like this has no need to stop their operations for any man who claims to be a king. Much like for any young maiden who made the very same claim. So here they were, heroes throughout time and worlds, sitting together at a couple tables side-by-side to accommodate them. Heaven help any random passerby who thought it might be a good idea to join in...

That is right. So all of the knights of the kingdom fought and competed against each other for a chance at the throne. It was not going as well as originally thought, so another method was created by a powerful warlock.

[ Closing her eyes, she thinks back on it. ] A holy blade had been forced inside a stone and whoever pulled it free would become king.

So knights and even boys who were not fit to be knights all tried their hand at it.

I should wonder the criteria for a king, according to this sword and the magician who made the solution to the crisis be this, if anything. But please, continue.

Ha, that is because this magician was crafty. Only a proper heir could pull the sword from the stone and seeing as there was only one child who fit that criteria...

I hid my gender. [ Calmly spoken, but there's distance in her voice. ]

No one would have a maiden for a king, you understand.

But gender does not impact one's skill as a ruler, and I'm going to guess yours was an eventful reign.

Yes and no. As King Arthur, I did manage to turn the kingdom's prosperity around and Britain flourished. However that success came at too high of a cost.

Since I could not reveal my gender to no man, I had to keep everyone at a distance. Even my own queen could not love me as a proper one should, understandably so, but I had to send away one of my best knights because of it.

My people could trust me to lead a kingdom, but they could not trust me to keep their best interests in mind. No trust in a leader made the country unwell. Even my knights argued amongst themselves due to me.

Mm, but how does being trusted to lead a kingdom not differ from keeping the best interest of those below you in mind? That makes no sense to me.

I had to make calls that were for the best of the country at a whole and some suffered due to it. [ Allowing a village to fall just to gain a better footing in battle to lead them to victory. That sort of thing isn't easily forgiven. ] Due to some of the decisions I made, there was unrest. A king that felt no emotion could not know how his subjects felt is how they worded it.

But those are the sorts of decisions one must make for the good of the whole, even if it is not understood by all why the thing must be. Unrest happens. Life goes on and the opinion of the -- ah, I don't know know what you'd call them here, lower people? -- doesn't matter so long as the greater good is preserved.

They were necessary, but I still think to this day that someone was out to sabotage me. Sadly, it worked well as my own knights could not bring themselves to trust me.

[ She glances off to the side. ] Apparently there is more to this tale that not even I know of. So many others speak of King Arthur as though he were a hero, majestic and a leader that Britain is proud of.

That is a troubling force behind this place.

Mmm, that wouldn't be the first or last time that was part of a ruler's lot. Frankly, if you've not dealt with assassination attempts, I consider you lucky.

Anyroad, if you're spoken of in history with deep respect, then I would not begrudge the generations that found value in the story. History. Whichever they classify your reign as.
