[It's a moment before he stirs at all, as though just waking up from a deep slumber. But then, just as he starts to barely open his eyes...]

[In a sudden burst of energy, he takes in a gasping breath like someone who had been struggling for air up until just now, and while taking some more deep breaths, immediately sits up straight, flusteredly patting his arms, legs, and chest as though to check that they're there and that he can check them.

When that automatic check has been satisfied, he flops backward on the couch again, bringing his hand to his forehead (possibly over his eyes?) and still breathing heavily.]
