subjects are overrated, who needs them?

Summary: Rose wakes up from her spontaneous coma (canon update) and John takes her on a highly romantic date in a Dragonair gondola. Be jelly.

Since this wasn't the first time it had happened and, overall, it was hardly a rare occurrence in this world, John hadn't been too terribly worried when Rose passed out the previous Sunday. He knew she'd be back up again in a week or so, though that still hadn't prevented him from spending more time inside the room than out. After all, what if she woke up early?

He was pretty sure that was a thing that could happen, so better safe than sorry!

But there was one thing that he did have to leave the room for that he just couldn't avoid and that was work. But it was honestly a good thing he had, because if he had called out? He probably wouldn't have been able to concoct the date plan he was currently waiting to put into motion. It just needed one last thing, and that was a conscious Rose.

Okay, well technically a conscious John as well. Because at around 8 in the morning, he was just as unconscious as Rose, lying next to her in the bed with an arm over her and Michael J. the Zorua nestled between them. Rose's face is covered in a variety of marker doodles, the most prominent being a proclamation of "i love butts." scrawled across her forehead. Though there's also some kitty whiskers and more than likely at least one penis because apparently Dave wanted to play too. Seems the boys got a little bored while Rose was unconscious.

Aaaa lazy Sundays. Aren't they great?

"You better not." She's still laughing, though. "I'll have to kick your ass."

[ghostytrainer]

"Pshh. Don't worry, like I would do something like that on purpose. That's a week that I could have spent doing other things completely wasted. Plus, you guys have pretty much spoiled my entire future for me already. What would the point even be?"

[tentacletrainer]

"Your entire future, hm? And how do you know that? After all, the trolls, Dave and I aren't on the Golden Ship Prospit. We have no idea what kind of antics you and Jade are up to."

[ghostytrainer]

"Okay well...maybe not the ENTIRE thing. But come on, it's me and Jade. I doubt our antics are anything to get up in arms about. I mean it's not like the trolls are with us or anything. We probably just have a bunch of everyday John and Jade adventures and generally try not to be bored out of our minds on a golden ship."

If only he knew.

If. Only.

"So I still stand by my point. I would much rather spend a week training and working and spending time with you guys then being caught in a brain time warp."

[tentacletrainer]

"If you say so. I wouldn't mind you being on page with me though."

[ghostytrainer]

"Hah, you and Karkat both. But given that it's been nearly two years, I would be surprised if it happened at this point."

[tentacletrainer]

"That's alright. I think I equally want you to remain as naive as you are."

[ghostytrainer]

"Oh my god, make up your mind, you crazy woman!" He laughs, rowing the paddle through the water a few more times.

[tentacletrainer]

"Now, if I did that, I wouldn't be nearly as flighty. And wouldn't that be disappointing?"

[ghostytrainer]

He put son his 'serious thinking face' for a moment. "Hm...well I guess you have a point there. A Rose who isn't flighty? I don't think that is a world I want to live in!" He chuckles.

"Mostly because it's probably some bizarro dimension where clouds are actually monsters that eat people and everyone walks on walls and caterpillars are the ruling species. Or something."

[tentacletrainer]

"That first part is plausible even for a world where I am flighty, just by nature of my alignment with Derse."

[ghostytrainer]

"Rose, please don't turn the clouds into man-eating monsters, okay? If you promise me nothing else for the rest of our lives, at least promise me that much."

He is completely and utterly serious about this. Can't you tell?

[tentacletrainer]

"Unfortunately, I cannot make promises. You know how those tricky, grim-laden circumstances go."

[ghostytrainer]

"Gasp! Rose! How do you ever expect to marry me then?! That's a promise! Oh no, this changes everything..."

GENUINE DISTRESS.

[tentacletrainer]

"No, no, John. That's not a promise. That's a commitment. There is a distinct difference."

[ghostytrainer]

"And isn't a commitment based on a promise? Do I have to worry about you crossing your fingers during the whole in sickness and in health, for better or worse thing? I mean I know you were planning on poisoning me once already. Do I need to worry about you throwing me to the dogs when I'm a senile old geezer and I don't know where I am anymore?"

[tentacletrainer]

"That's assuming I don't reach that state of being first. After all, I am the older one here."

[ghostytrainer]

"By a couple of months! Plus you're smarter than me to begin with."

And that...clearly has an impact on that sort of thing. Clearly.

[tentacletrainer]

Whether it actually has an impact or not, Rose laughs. "Whatever you say. You're the senile one."

[ghostytrainer]

He lifts the oar out of the water a little and shakes it, proclaiming: "Get off my lawn!" in his best old man voice before dissolving into giggles and going back to rowing.

[tentacletrainer]

John.

You may have missed it.

But that was most certainly Rose snorting in her laughter at that impression.

[ghostytrainer]

Oh no. No she was definitely not fortunate enough for that snort to escape John's ears.

"Did you just snort?! Did I seriously just make you laugh so hard that you actually snorted?"

He throws up an arm, gesturing defeat.

"That's it, I'm done. Never again will I tell another joke because I can't hope to top that. Done."

[tentacletrainer]

You know how when you get to a point in laughing that you're snorting, everything else seems ten times as funny and therefor this violent chain of snort laughing continues?

Enjoy, John. You have successfully caught Rose in a laughing fit.

[ghostytrainer]

"Oh my god. All the jokes I tell you on a daily basis and this is what gets you to this point? A terrible old man impression? Seriously?"

It wasn't even that funny Rose, oh my god.

"So done with you. So freaking done."

John, her sides are hurting. There are tears. Stop being so funny!
