Who: Eridan & Cheria
Where: A restaurant in Cerulean City

Summary: Eridan asked Cheria out on a date and she said yes because she felt bad.

It had taken him a while to organize, but now that they had settled in Cerulean for the holidays, Eridan had worked on setting up his date with his travel partner. He wanted to make a good impression, but more importantly it had to go well so that all those people that doubted him could have their comments shoved right back in their face.

So here they were, the day after Christmas, headed towards a nice looking place to eat that Eridan had come across a few days prior.

"So I was thinkin' after eatin' we can go watch somethin', I'm sure there's got to be a mowie of some such that's not too bad."

"That sounds like a good plan." Something small and easy and doesn't require potential confusion for getting kissed; Cheria took GREAT CARE in taking down any mistletoe she found around the hotel room they were staying in, mostly because she's pretty sure this date is already crossing that moirail line she's gotten herself into.

Still, she dressed nice for the date; Cheria left her hair down and wore a simple pale blue and white snowflake sweaterdress with black leggings, along with the new pink peacoat she got as a gift.

"There are probably a lot of holiday themed movies, so hopefully they don't all sound boring or for children."

Thankfully Eridan is oblivious to the way Cheria actually felt about this date because he is pretty upbeat and dare you say hopeful for once. He went to some effort dressing for the occasion- black jeans, a sweater and the new scarf from Karkat all wrapped up in a nice winter coat he bought for himself when he had been out buying gifts for people.

"Well they don't sound interestin' at all but I guess we'll see once we get there won't we."

The building is now in sight and he points it out to her before oh so smoothly linking her arm around his.

"That's where we're goin' by the way. They have a collection of different food types so I figured that was best seein' as I didn't know what you'd feel like eatin'."

"Right, we'll see! I'm always a fan if they have a dish with grilled chicken, but trying other things is never bad."

Okay he's not doing too terribly, and that arm link is kind of cute. Giving his arm a squeeze and the reward of a sweet smile, Cheria nods at seeing the building being pointed out.

They enter the restaurant- he even holds open the door- being met by the waitress who directs them over to their table. It's a smallish one by the window, he'd asked for it when he reserved because hey, if things go wrong or he gets bored or whatever they can just stare out the window or something. Smooth.

Now that they're inside he removes his coat, slipping it over the back of the chair whilst ordering a soda from the waitress.

"What do you want to drink, Cher? Seein' as I asked you out and such I figured I should pay for everythin', so go ahead and order whatever you feel like havin'."

It's said in a completely normal tone, but oh god please don't pick out a bunch of really expensive crap, he likes you but not enough to throw away his life savings on food.

It's probably a good thing she doesn't know his plan of why they particularly have a window seat; so far, she thinks this is going nicely. Smiling, she picks up the menu to give it a quick look over.

"Well, I think I'll start with some tea and a chicken caesar salad." Good thing he still didn't mention about DON'T PICK EXPENSIVE STUFF; Cheria is a light eater anyway! The drink and salad will hardly cost seven bucks.

"If we feel like it after dinner, maybe we could get dessert?" It's said with a sweet, pleeease? sort of tone.

"Yeah, sure." She can have desert, it doesn't matter much to him. Ordering some pasta dish for himself, the waitress hurries off to fetch their drinks and place in the orders.

So... now what. He should probably talk about something, but he doesn't have a topic. Aside form himself of course. Oh wait, no that isn't quite true.

"So I heard that get together turned into a complete disaster so it's a good thing we never went." Yes that will do.

Beaming at the yes, Cheria gets herself situated with the napkin in her lap and ready for whenever the food arrives; the simple silence at first is fine, but the comment makes her blink in surprise.

"What, really? What happened?"

"Well, first they had some weird lookin' thing that was meant to be a tree but it was made out of latex gloves, I mean how shitty is that? Then they all drank a load of soporific liquid.. er.. it's called alcohol I think?"

Yeah, alcohol that was it. Smoker had talked to him about going to the bar and drinking once, and Eridan didn't know what he meant. He pauses a moment to sip at his drink, saving the best part of the story for last.

"Then they all took part in some human tradition where you got to stand under a plant and kiss, so everyone was kissing everyone else like the load of damn harpies that they are and basically the whole thing was terrible."

She would have commented that a tree made out of rubber gloves sounds hilarious, though it probably meant no one had time to get a tree. The talk of alcohol at the party had Cheria rubbing her face with a heavy sigh.

"Oh my god, who would bring alcohol to a party full of minors? There can't have been anyone over twenty one there!"

The last part has her rubbing her face more, shaking her head.

"Well, mistletoe makes sense, but with the alcohol in the mix, it had to have been really rough the next morning. I'm certain no one was kissing beyond little ones on the cheek, but alcohol makes one do really.. really stupid things."

"What's bein' twenty one have to do with it?" Honest question, Eridan still doesn't know shit about human laws, mostly because he simply doesn't care about them.

"So. Like I said. Complete disaster an' I didn't want to go anyway, but now I'm even more glad that I didn't."

"It's better if you're old enough to handle the liquor, and twenty one is the age limit in my world. It's illegal to drink under that age, plus there is a danger of alcohol poisoning."

Nodding in agreement, Cheria siiighs and sits back in her seat.

"Well, I would have liked to have gone just to see everyone, but I'm glad I missed the alcohol part. I've seen enough drunk people in my life to know the next morning, they all feel so sick and have a headache that doesn't go away most of the day."

"Well you could a' gone but it would've been on your own, I'm not dealin' with them."

There's a pause, as he looks over the table at her.

"Besides I'd much rather have spent it with just you, like I did." Oh yeah. He's so smooth.

"That's understandable enough..."

Oh. Blinking a couple times, Cheria flushes and lets her words trail off, before giggling and yeah, her smile is back. Eridan, you are actually scoring points here.

"Hee, well, I hope it was time well spent."

"Of course it was. We always have a good time together, right?"

Please say yes. Oh god, what if she doesn't say yes, this would be a complete disaster and- okay, calm down Eridan. Act cool.

"I mean I wouldn't have asked you out if I didn't like spendin' my time with you."

"We do have a good time together more often than not." It's said with a hint of teasing, though that next comment has her cheeks taking a nice shade of pink; her smile grows though. Good job, Eridan!

"Then it's a shame on me for not agreeing sooner. I wish there wasn't such a gap between our ages is all."

"Well the gap's not too big right? I mean you're.."

He takes a moment to work it out, in sweeps not in years. That would make Cheria around eight sweeps and.. oh. Oh, okay, that is a bigger gap than he realised now that he thinks about it.

"It don't matter that much though right? I'm not human anyway an' us trolls are obviously far more mature than your humans of the same age. An' if you're enjoyin' the date then maybe you should take that as a sign?"

A sign to date him more, obviously.

There's enough of a gap that she can't outright say "yes" to date more, but at least the conversation has to take a pause with the food finally arriving; Cheria distracts herself with thanking the waiter and unfolding her napkin. Eridan was essentially thirteen still, and even if he looks about sixteen, it's not as though that age is any better.

Really, it's inappropriate to be on this date at all and good god police don't take her away. She's not a cradle robber!!

He's stopped eating now, staring at her and waiting on an answer. Silence is not an answer!

"....Cher?"

Yep this silence just got awkward and HER MOUTH IS OCCUPIED WITH DRINKING WATER, HOLD UP. Just looking at her like that makes her feel so incredibly guilty though and after a few moments of mentally going 'crapcrapcrap', Cheria sets her cup down.

"I'd.. well, honestly, the age gap really is.. something I can't just ignore. It may not be as big of a deal for you, but for me it's a little tough." Biting her lip, she gives a small, gentle, but sheepish smile.

"Eridan, this date really is going nicely though, so don't write yourself off for finding someone your own age. If anything, consider this practice for when you find that one!"

Woah woah woah, what. The fork is going down now.

"What are sayin'? That this isn't even a real date as far as you're concerned?"

After he'd even offered to pay for the meals too, well if she didn't want it to be a real date she could've said something at any point up until it happened!

"It's -- what?"

Stopping, almost wishing that time would freeze so she could really have more time to think, Cheria thought quick on if she's the one being selfish here. She still isn't being very fair to him, is she.. and to that, she looks down.

"No, it is. I'm sorry, I'm just treating you like a child, aren't I."

"But you're still sayin' you don't want to date me."

That's pretty much what she had said, and even if it wasn't it was what Eridan was going to assume, always thinking the worst.

"It's not about you personally; it's just the age difference." The words come out gently, laced with guilt. She just totally led him on, didn't she. Wow, what a poor friend she is.

"Then why did you agree to it?"

He's not mad.. okay he's a little mad, but mostly he just isn't sure what's going on because she had agreed to it when she could have just said no like the time before.

"I wanted to give you the chance, and with how people from your world seem so intent on leaving you alone and warning me, that I wanted to help you prove them wrong."

Fiddling with the napkin in her lap, Cheria finally brings her gaze back up.

"But you don't want to date me." He's just gonna keep repeating that part until she answers it directly, because its kind of important.

And I don't give a shit what any a' those lowlifes said about me.

"Eridan."

Did she bring her eyes up a few moments ago? Yes, and they're going right back down to her lap, because dating him is.. well. She just can't get over the little hump called age gap; if she were thinking more clearly, Cheria might be able to see that this is somewhat childish, but she's far more distracted with thinking she's an awful person for agreeing to the date without agreeing that she wanted to go on the date.

Okay not gonna lie, his patience is weaing a little thin now.

"Yes or No."

You mean it wasn't thin before?

"...No."

"...."

Just in time for the waiter to come back and top up their drinks. Boy this meal sure is going to be awkward now isn't it.

"Right. Fine."

Especially since both of their appetites are probably long gone. She's not about to make him pay for this though, since the mood is completely shot; while the waiter is there, she asks for some boxes in a quiet voice, digging for her purse.

He was about ti pay, but seeing her get her purse out... yeah he's totally going to let her pay for half of it. Like they usually do. because this is so not a date anymore.

Payment done, the waiter comes back after a few minutes with boxes, and Cheria is quickly packing up her food. Standing and tucking the leftovers under her arm, she's unable to help apologizing again before heading out of the restaurant.

Wow she sucks.
