let's start the new year right

Who: Harry Truman, Dale Cooper, Carmen Sandiego, Albert Rosenfield, Gordon Cole
Where: Celadon
When: December 31 through January 1
Summary: Bidding farewell to 2012 in style with shenanigans!
Rating: Probably no higher than PG
Log:

Harry hadn't intended to set the gears in motion for a grand New Year's Eve plan just by asking if one existed, but that's what happened anyway. The initial answer was no, not really; the final answer, after a stunningly short amount of time in Cooper and Carmen's company, was that they'd fly over to Celadon to bid the year good riddance by way of having a damn fine time gambling and partying and whatever the hell else. Since that sounded infinitely more appealing than going to bed early after another sad song session up in his room alone, Harry agreed instantly. Gordon would have responded just as quickly if Cooper didn't have to repeat the invitation four times, but eventually, he said yes, too.

Three guesses as to how long it took before Albert finally agreed to go.

One freezing, four-hour flight later, mid-afternoon finds them in the kaleidoscopic city of Celadon. Everyone's gearing up for the impending celebration, it seems: the casino's already crowded, the department store's nothing short of packed with people seeking out end-of-the-year sales, and only luck can be credited with those few rooms at the hotel opening up just as the call from Saffron came in – and what a hotel it is. Harry's never seen anything quite like it in real life. In fact, the tragically small town-focused part of him kind of doubted anything that extravagant existed outside of a Hollywood sound stage or, you know, Paris or something. It's nice to learn how wrong you are, sometimes.

As the sun begins its descent, the city collectively roars into party mode. A few premature fireworks go off from the condominiums' balconies, and if he really strains to listen, Harry swears he can already hear the popping of champagne corks over the faint beat of muffled music coming from who knows where. It's then that he begins to wonder if this was such a good idea after all; sure, the thought of getting out of the house for a while was nice, especially after the whirlwind that was Christmas, but this seems like a new beast altogether.

Except then he's being whisked past the casino doors and there isn't really time to protest, and he can't tell if it's Coop or a stranger that tells him to loosen up and have a little fun, but he figures it's New Year's Eve, so why the hell not.

And there you have the tagline for the night.

[Carmen's no stranger to the practice of wrapping up a long flight and immediately hitting the ground running; crime doesn't traditionally wait around for a nap between transit and action, no matter which side of the law you're on. So despite the long and freezing flight, she's still quite the ball of enthusiasm once they land and get checked into the hotel. It's only the middle of the afternoon, and there's still time before the evening festivities begin, and she wouldn't be Carmen Sandiego if she let a new city go unexplored once she touched down in it.

(It also helps, perhaps, that it's Celadon in particular, and that means the Kanto branch of the Breeding Center is here, full of memories of Kiki and all.)

As it is, the city is much too big to see the whole thing before it's time for their rendezvous, but she manages to cover a fair amount of it, and she's not without her spoils to show for it — one of which happens to be the floor-length red dress she's wearing when she and the boys hit the doors of the casino. Her companions have all got their swagger engaged; far be it from her to not follow suit. Pun intended.

Once inside, she'll be spending her evening drifting from game to game, trying her hand at each of them before ultimately settling on blackjack as her night's game of choice.

What can she say? It's fun to watch the high rollers.]
