A fishing excursion between best friends

"WHOO-HOO~! Let's go, Dash!"

Rainbow was eager to get some experience on catching wild Pokemon, and she wanted to start out in a really awesome way. What better way than to do something she never even considered back in Ponyville: fishing!

Still, even an athletic girl like Rainbow Dash knew she would need help when it came to the basics of fishing so she asked Fluttershy early after breakfast for help, and off they went on her Ponyta.

The best thing about Rainbow's Pokemon? Dash was a shiny Pokemon, different from other Ponyta as her fiery mane didn't blaze orange, but a magnificent shade of blue. And it would take a fast Pokemon to get them from Goldenrod to Route 34, where their fishing would take place.

"Best. Idea. EVER~!!"

It didn't take long before the two friends reached the area where there was lots of water and plenty of water Pokemon to fish for. There were no trainers in sight, so that meant no unexpected battle challenges for them to try to accept, at least in Rainbow's case.

Fluttershy was looking forward to this as well. It was nice to be out and about, no longer sick and having others worried over her. It was also nice to be distracted from her conflicting feelings about Applejack but that was another can of worms entirely. She wished Dash the Rapidash would go a little slower, but she was too shy to voice any complaints until they arrived at their destination.

What a lovely day for fishing! She smiled brightly as they looked at her surroundings. Everything was crisp, clean, serene... "I bet we'll capture some very happy Pokemon today."

Rainbow, for the most, loved how fast Dash ran and couldn't wait until she evolved! She made sure to read up on the Pokedex about both Ponyta and Rapidash when her Pokemon was born, and admitted that having Dash on their team was like being back home, on four hooves.

"Yeah, I'm sure we'll catch some awesome Pokemon! What kind of Water types are out there? I only know about Tank, his evolved forms and a couple others I might've skimmed through on the Pokedex."

"Oh, there's all kinds!" When it came to Pokemon, she could be oddly loud and excitable about it. She began skipping towards the water, eager to see which ones where there for her to make friends with. "Poliwag is so cute, and it can evolve in different ways! And then there's Tentacool who has such a pretty jewel... and Magikarp are so sweet, you just want to give them a great big hug... Goldeen are so gorgeous, they remind me of Rarity..."

Rainbow could only chuckle, realzing since reaching Violet that Fluttershy saw all Pokemon as friends and valued pets. She also realized something else since reaching Violet, but...opening that can of worms wouldn't be fair to her fillyhood friend. She had enough problems to deal with!

"Really - Magikarp are sweet, huh? I read they don't have any attacks but one or two. I guess I can see a Goldeen and think of Rarity, but I wouldn't name one after her if I caught it! What about that one I got you for Hearth's Warming Eve? ...Feebas, I think it was called?"

Going to the Pokedex for information made a lot more sense to Rainbow than asking Twilight; she'd just get a lot of technical mumbo-jumbo that went right over her head!

By now Fluttershy was kneeling at the shore, staring down into the crystal blue water. She was trying to look for any signs of movement, but wasn't having any luck so far. Perhaps anything down there was equally shy. But that was what the Fishing Rod was for.

"Oh, I just love the Feebas you got me. She's such a darling. She likes to snuggle and have her scales stroked and always has a great big smile on her face. I can't thank you enough for letting me have her."

Rainbow glanced away from Fluttershy at the compliment, kneeling down next to her while not showing her flushed cheeks. "...Yeah, n-no problem! I'm sure you'll raise a wonderful Pokemon, Flutters!"

Rainbow went to pick up the Fishing Rod, held it up...and stared at it. "Okay...so, what's the first step?"

"It's very easy." She lightly took Rainbow's hands, and held them over the water, allowing the bob to dip onto the water's surface. "That thing always attracts Pokemon all on its own... I think it smells good to them or something. You just wait to wait until you feel tugging on the other end."

There was no way Fluttershy couldn't see how red Rainbow's face was from that kind of contact! She nodded, doing her best to hold the Rod steady while keeping her gaze on the water.

Don't look back at Fluttershy, don't look back at Fluttershy, DON'T look back at Fluttershy...!

"So Applejack's back with us! Pretty awesome how I show up, and then a month later she returns." Rainbow declared, literally turning to look back at Fluttershy.

...Nuts! You looked back at Fluttershy!

Fluttershy didn't notice the bright red blush due to her own face faltering. Yes, she was happy that Applejack was back. But that came with its own pain. She slowly let go of Rainbow's hands, sitting on the shoe while hugging her knees.

"... Rainbow Dash... you don't remember being here before, right...?" Now she wouldn't look at her friend, worried where this conversation would take place.

Rainbow shook her head, steadying the Rod while shrugging her shoulders. "I get bits and pieces from time to time but...nothing concrete. I don't even remember my old Pokemon team! Twilight filled me in on everything else..."

Fluttershy ducked her head lower, almost pushing into her face into her knees. "Did... did she tell you about... me... and Applejack...?"

Rainbow's tone was slightly different as she sighed deeply before replying. "...Yeah, she did. I-I don't have a problem with it! I'll be happy for you, I will! I hated hearing that you had to go through all that pain 'cause of her, me and everypony leaving...you shouldn't have had to suffer like that, and I'm sorry..."

Part of Rainbow realized she was slightly going on and on, but she took one hand off the Rod and pressed it against Fluttershy's shoulder reassuringly.

That was helpful to hear. She took a deep breath before lifting her head, looking weary but with a grateful smile on her face. "Thanks, Rainbow Dash... I just... I just get so worried sometimes... Last year, she got me a beautiful ring for Hearth's Warming Eve... I kept it when she left... But... a few days ago, she saw it... She didn't remember it, but it brought up all these funny feelings in my chest..."

She closed her eyes with a sigh. "I wish everything could be normal again... I don't want anypony to get hurt."

Rainbow felt her heart crack, squeezing Fluttershy's shoulder gently while glancing away. "That's wonderful...I-I'll be happy for you no matter what decision you make! But, Flutters...there's lots of other ponies out there...ponies who just realized how they feel before dealing with scary problems and after the danger's passed..."

Alas, while Fluttershy was kind she could also be painfully oblivious. She rubbed one of her eyes before facing Rainbow Dash in confusion. "Other ponies? I thought it was just the four of us. Are there more out there?"

Rainbow's cheeks were flushed again, resisting the urge to facepalm at Fluttershy's obvious answer. She took a chance and turned around to face her fillyhood friend. This wasn't the time to be worried! She was Rainbow Dash, best flyer in Equestria, and future top Pokemon trainer in Johto!

"...No, but that's not the point. When we met up in Violet, and you came up and hugged me...I was really happy to see you again. I nearly flipped out when you got sick and couldn't lift a hoof -or a hand!- to help, that I had to stand by and let the poison pass on it's own!"

Rainbow's face was filled with determination as she cleared her throat. "Flutters...what I'm trying to say is that I..."

Tug, tug went the Rod, Rainbow barely able to turn and grab hold of it properly while also silently vowing payback for whatever Pokemon chose to ruin her moment.

"...I got a bite! Fluttershy, I got a bite!"

Now there was one way to distract her. Their troubles were instantly forgotten at the prospect of making a new Pokemon friend. Oooh, what would it? Fluttershy's mouth split into delighted giggling, and she grabbed Rainbow's hands, trying to help her tug it in. Worry later, Pokemon now!

"We can do it! Just pull as hard as you can! Come on!"

"...Right! It's payback time!" Rainbow ignored her flushed cheeks at the closeness and pulled, seeing the Rod pull back. Wow, whatever was on the other end must be really strong and tough!

"Come oooooon!" Rainbow gritted her teeth and pulled really hard, the Pokemon hidden from below shooting up in the sky and being blocked from view by the sun.

"Alright! We got it!"

Being as weak as she was, it was easy for Fluttershy to be knocked flat on her back from both Rainbow and the Pokemon's strength. She blinked dizzily, trying to find her balance in order to sit up again. Her head spun, making her unable to see what they had nabbed. "What... what is it?"

Rainbow had also stumbled, moving to help Fluttershy stand up as the Pokemon came down and landed nearby.

"It's...it's...it's...!" Rainbow's excitement turned to total surprise and disbelief as the Pokemon finally came into view...holding his head.

"Psy. Psyduck!"

"...What the hay is that supposed to be?!"

Fluttershy had an answer... sort of.

"It's so cute!" She scooted closer to the duck and began happily petting his beak, all a flutter over the new friend."Aren't you just the most adorable ducky I've ever seen! It's so nice to meet you!"

"Psyduck."

Rainbow facepalmed repeatedly, dropping to her knees and stretching a hand out in frustration toward Fluttershy and the Pokemon. "Are you kidding me?! What kind of attacks does this thing know? How do you expect me to use it in battle?"

Rainbow, you could always use the Pokedex.

Fluttershy lightly tsked, trying to reprimand her friend. Never judge a book by its cover, as Twilight would say. "I'm sure Psyduck can do lots of things in battle, you just need to give it a chance! Why don't you battle it right now and see what it can do? I bet it will surprise you."

Just like Fluttershy to defend a poor, strange-looking Duck Pokemon. That's what Rainbow liked about her, but she got up and ran over her options. She'd planned on getting at least 2 or 3 Pokemon so she left behind 1/2 her team in the PC.

"Alright, Flutters...but I want you to be my cheering section! Can't make awesome catches without strong support, right?"

She was initially hesitant, but Rainbow was her friend. She tried to be strong, and pet Psyduck one more time. "I still like you very much, and I'd like you to join us." With that somewhat-apology finished, she scooted over to Rainbow's side, ready to cheer her on.

In her own way, of course. "Go. Go. Gooo."

Rainbow would totally deny this if asked, but ever since the Best Young Flier's competition in Cloudsdale she'd gotten used to Fluttershy's 'feeble' cheering.

Didn't mean she wouldn't prod her from time to time, though. "Louder. Goooooooo, Daring!!"

A quick toss of a Pokeball later, and Daring emerged, ready for battle.

"Chika~!"

"Psyduck."

"Hurray, Daring." She made feeble little claps as her idea of a rousing cheer. This was as loud as she thought she could make it, as she was always worried when a battle would start. "Just please be careful, the both of you, okay?"

"Ha, no need to worry Flutters. Daring's really gotten stronger since she hatched on Hearth's Warming Eve. It's kinda like Twilight's here with us!" Rainbow grinned confidently, taking a breath and letting it go.

"Okay Daring, spin that Psyduck around with your Vine Whip!"

"Chi-KA!!" Instantly, two vines shot from Daring's back, wrapped around Psyduck's stomach and spun it around. After a minute or two, the vines retracted and Psyduck wobbled...only to keep on staring.

"Psy-yi-yi."

"...Told ya it's not so tough, Flutters-!"

And then Rainbow was put in her place, as Psyduck's eyes briefly glowed, and for that same brief moment Daring glowed too! When the glow faded, seemingly nothing happened.

"Guess he didn't have enough. Okay Daring, spin it with Vine Whip again!"

"Chika!" Nodding, Daring moved to send out her vines and gasped worriedly when nothing happened!

"Chikori...!"

"No way! What did that little guy do to my Daring?!!" If either Rainbow or Fluttershy were to check their Pokedex, one of Psyduck's attacks would be labeled as 'Disable.'

Fluttershy had been around enough Pokemon to have a fairly good guess at moves. She gasped in realization, as that glow could only come from certain types of Pokemon. What a shock!"

"That glow... that's a psychic type move! I'm not sure, but I don't think you can use Vine Whip again for a while... but that means Psyduck might be a psychic type! That's simply amazing! What a wonderful Pokemon!"

A Psychic type...! Rainbow's eyes glittered excitedly and a wide grin crossed her face.

"Flutters, you were right. This little guy's probably got a TON of awesome moves! What do you say: I'll catch him, and you can name him?

"Daring, give him your Energy Ball attack!"

"Chika!" Nodding in determination, Daring opened her mouth and a ball of energy slowly appeared. As she started to gather energy, Psyduck's eyes glowed once more.

"Wait! Daring, hold on-!"

But Daring's attack was halted almost immediately, the Grass type glowing as well before turning around to face the ponies.

"Uh, Flutters...is Daring okay?"

Daring suddenly swung her leaf around, back and forth and before either girl could blink both were hit with a pretty strong Sweet Scent.

"...Guess not...! Wow, that's a really relaxing attack Daring has..."

Well, it wasn't the worst attack that could have happened. In fact it was very relaxing. Fluttershy smiled as the sweet wave of heavenly smells washed over her. "... That's really nice. Why, this is the most peaceful battle I've ever seen. What nice Pokemon."

Rainbow smiled herself, fully taken in by the sweetness of the attack before realizing that her own Pokemon was attacking them!

"...W-Wait a second! Yeah it's a nice attack, but Daring's not supposed to attack us! Flutters, snap out of it! Daring, you too! Use your Energy Ball!"

"...Chika? Chika, chika!" Still confused from Psyduck's attack, aptly named as Confusion, Daring turned back around and quickly gathered up a ball of energy before sending it at the Duck Pokemon! Moments later, it connected which sent Psyduck toppling over.

It took Fluttershy a few extra moments for her to snap out of what happened. by the time she did, Psyduck had flopped over, so now she was a little confusion. In fact, she hoped it was over. Watching Pokemon fight was never a fun experience for her.

"... Did we win?"

"...Just about. Go, Pokeball!" Rainbow grabbed one of her empty Pokeballs and tossed it at Psyduck before it could get up.

It went inside, and the ball wobbled once...twice...a third time...

And with a Click! the capture was complete!

"Alright! I did it, Flutters! I caught a Psyduck!"

"Chika~!"

"...I caught a Psyduck!" She wasn't sure if she should be happy or not.

Time for celebration! Full of new energy, Fluttershy jumped to her feet, dancing and leaping around at the addition to their family. She scooped up the Chikorita, swaying it around her arms.

"A Psyduck! A Psyduck! We're going to have a sweet little Psyduck with us from now on! This was the best fishing day ever!"

Daring enjoyed the celebration, happily wondering if that meant they had a new family member. Rainbow just stared at her Pokeball which now housed a Psyduck. She also made sure to not face Fluttershy right now, as she couldn't help but smile at seeing her so happy.

"...Well, I guess it can't be too bad. Psyduck has those awesome attacks, after all. Any ideas on what I should name him, Flutters?"

Oh yes, names were very important! Fluttershy slowed down her dancing, but kept rocking Daring in her arms as gently as she could.

"A name... A name... How about... Quackley?" Well, she thought that was a cute name for a duck.

"...You're kidding, right?" Rainbow's expression said 'try again!' To her, that didn't scream 'awesome,' 'radical' or 'cool!'

Awww, she liked it! Her face began to fall, and she slowly stroked Daring's leaf, slightly hurt. She tried to think of 'awesome', 'radical' and 'cool' names, but alas her taste in the extreme was very poor.

"Um... how about... Mister Feathers?"

Rainbow definitely turned away, not liking that hurt expression on Fluttershy's face but...she really couldn't see herself calling out 'Quackley' in a Gym battle! Waiting patiently, she listened while turning back around...and facefaulted.

"...'Mr. Feathers?' C'mon Flutters, think 'fantastic' or 'really cool!' I'd even pick 'Derpy' if I thought the name fit a Duck Pokemon!"

That's when, of it's own accord, Psyduck's Pokeball opened and said Pokemon emerged.

Still holding it's head.

It seemed that Psyduck would be having its own opinion in this conversation. She blinked a few times, and then came up with an odd sort of idea.

"Maybe not Derpy, but... how about Ditzy? Ditzy Do?"

"...That's PERFECT~!" Rainbow smiled happily, racing over and hugging Fluttershy tightly, Daring literally in between but the Grass type wasn't too uncomfortrable.

"I knew I could count on you Flutters! Ditzy Do, welcome to Team Dash!"

"Psy-ay-yi. Psyduck?"

Fluttershy might recognize the question the newly named Ditzy was asking: whether or not Rainbow and Fluttershy were it's new parents.

Crisis averted! Friendship saves the day once more! Fluttershy beamed happily, giving her friend an affectionate nuzzle to the neck before hearing Ditzy's question. She tilted her head back, and then nodded.

"Ditzy wanted to know if we were its parents..." Which she found a little odd, as Ditzy was hardly a baby Pokemon, but she shrugged it off. "I guess we kind of are."

And Rainbow's cheeks were flushed red once more, laughing nervously while coughing slightly. "Heh, yeah I guess we kinda are. I caught it, but you named it...

"A-Anyway, tell you what Flutters: for each new city we visit, let's have a fishing trip together! See what kind of Pokemon we can find? And if we come across another Psyduck, I'll give it to you and you can name it Quackley or Mr. Feathers..."

That was how compromises worked between friends, right?

Fluttershy's big smile sealed the deal on that idea. She nodded enthusiastically, and bent over a little to give Ditzy a welcoming pat on the head. She'd all but forgotten all their earlier troubles, so overcome with love and affection for both ponies and pokemon.

"I'd really like that. And there's lots of places to fish in this world. I'm sure we'll find all kinds of interesting creatures. Then we'll have a bigger family with every trip!"

"Yeah! Best trip EVER~!"

Rainbow grinned while also giving Ditzy a welcoming pat. She guessed she could forgive her newest member for tugging on the Rod, but still...she almost admitted it! Who knew when they would have another chance to be alone again, just the two of them?

"Wanna stick around and try to catch another Pokemon Flutters, or should we head back to Goldenrod?"

"Let's go back... I want to show Applejack and Twilight our new friend right away! And Maybe Twilight knows things about Psyducks that we don't! We can all start learning right away!" Only a few people like Fluttershy could think learning was fun. She took Ditzy by one of his 'wings', and began leading him away, ready to get the trip going.

"Alright, but you're sitting in front this time! And take my notes for me?" Rainbow sighed while quickly running to grab the Rod, Ditzy's ball and to recall Daring before Fluttershy tried getting onto a grazing Dash while holding 2 Pokemon. She really had wanted to try and fish some more. Maybe they'd run into that Tentacool Fluttershy mentioned...she'd probably end up enduring her friend's pleading -but not the wibble!- before facing a Magikarp.
