Everyone loses their powers when they come here, Tobias.

I mean...I didn't have any to start with, but some of my friends did! And one of my friends was even an alien back home.

[because obviously someone with superpowers will believe in aliens.]

[He seems to perk a bit at that, lowering his head slightly. Then, the first thing Shaun says comes back to him full force.]

[So does that mean....if he left this place- somehow- he'd....go back to normal? ....Maybe?...]

Yeah! Her name's Aradia. She's really nice. And my friend John isn't an alien, but he says that back where he's from, he can control the wind.

[...I mean, this is also that one kind of jacked-up weekend, but surely it's still mostly the same for a lot of new people, right? It's nothing to cry about...]

I think you get them back when you go home.

[Tobias breathes a rather heavy sigh of relief, closing his eyes for a moment. If he can't morph here, then there's no way to know for certain if he really can at all unless he leaves this place. It's not an ideal answer, but....it works, for now. Enough to reduce his panic by several levels, at any rate.]

That....that's really good to hear, Shaun.

It...it's a shame, though. ...I can turn into animals.

[He flashes Shaun a small grin. ..It's a bit awkward, given the lack of practice with expressions, though.]

[Shaun looks relieved when Tobias stops panicking. He doesn't want his new friend upset, after all.]

Really? Man, that'd be the coolest power ever! What's your favorite animal to turn into?

Red-tailed Hawk, definitely. You wouldn't believe what it's like, being able to fly. ...I mean, it's different than just being on something that can fly.

Wow... I had a pet bird when I was younger. His name was Merlin. Our house was really big, so he had plenty of room to fly around when I let him out of his cage.

I always wondered what it'd be like.

[...He misses that bird...]

It's amazing. Try to imagine the most amazing, free feeling in the world, and you still won't really know what it's like.

I wish I had a bird when I was younger. I used to have a cat named Dude, though. ...It's kinda funny, because a cat was the first animal I ever changed into.

That sounds so cool! I bet not having people hands would get pretty old, though. Does it hurt when you use your powers?

[Like...it might be a pretty equal tradeoff, but a tradeoff nonetheless.]

Was it 'cause of Dude that you decided to be a cat first? I wanted a dog when I was little, but my brother was allergic to them, so we got Merlin instead. Mom and Dad were the ones who changed his cage and stuff, but I fed him and played with him every day.

[And then Merlin died because nothing Shaun loves is allowed to live, apparently (well, except his mom, but he hasn't seen her in over a year now).]

It doesn't hurt at all, actually. It's weird....like, you know it should be hurting, but it just doesn't. It's a distant feeling. ..Really weird.

[Tobias nods, running a hand through his hair.]

Yeah, it was. I decided to try out Dude first- and I do like the hawk better- but being a cat is just as cool.
