Which can be a problem, considering that ensuring they're not can be easier said than done at times.

It depends on the Pokemon, really. Some of them are easier to please than others, but they tend to have relatively simple tastes overall, in my experience.

You don't have half of them demanding their daily dose of interpretative dance the moment you wake up? Lucky you.

Oh, that part's not so bad. I'm more alarmed by the very few that demand their daily dose of blood.

Ah, I've dealt with a few of those as well... not necessarily blood, but life force.

Honestly, as long as they're not sick, you're not sick, and you don't overdo it, it's really not too much of a hassle.

...Sick or not, it's still kind of a hassle when she tries to get my blood by clawing my eye out.

[Sweet little Hellspawn, may she not go to another innocent trainer should he disappear.]

...Well, that's... aren't there better ways for her to do that?!

I can think of a million, but they're not quite good enough for her sadistic streak. She'd even try it on the newly-hatched ones if I let her.

I bought her egg from a departed friend. Irrational attachment can be funny like that, sometimes. And dangerous.

...you didn't happen to buy anything less murderous from your friend, did you, then.

Actually, my Persian, my Audino, my Octillery, my Lopunny and my Castform also come from her, though I only got the Castform when she disappeared.

...it's a Castform? Those things seem barely threatening at all... talk about Pokemon not matching your image of them.

Oh, the Castform isn't nearly as bad as the Purugly. The lack of claws helps.

...you've got two of them? Good lord, man, I appreciate your sentimental attachments, but sometimes you've got to make a statement.

I find 'fond memories over my personal safety' to be a perfectly acceptable statement.

Well... so long as you don't suffer any real injuries from it, I suppose. I have no idea what the healthcare for actual humans is like in this place, and having your eyes clawed out seems like a rather awful way to find out.

Don't worry. I've had enough experience with eye injuries to know better than to get another, even in worlds with proper doctors.

[...he squints a bit, and it looks very much like he wants to ask a question for a moment before he decides that "I was wondering how having your hair over one eye doesn't bother you all the time because you can't see anything out of it" may be a bit insensitive.]

[It must indeed look very much like that, because Ash suddenly starts laughing and shakes his head a little.]

Don't worry. So do I.

[And indeed, his newly displaced hair reveals an eye in perfect working condition, though the scar that crosses it goes pretty far down his cheek.]

Well, that's better than I expected, anyway.

[Because anything is better than the old spiky mullet, that's why.]

Believe me, it's better than I expected at first too. But that was still enough to convince me that I really don't want claws anywhere near my eyes.
