Bandou really hadn't made too much progress since he'd arrived in New Bark Town about a month ago. I mean, he should have! He'd played Pokémon plenty of times, he knew what he was doing! So why was it so damn hard to keep a damn Pokémon in its damn Pokéball?

In fact, he'd been out here for so long trying to catch a damn Shinx even though he totally said he could beat the first gym leader without one but shut up, that the wild Pokémon in the area were probably starting to get annoyed by him jumping out and startling them.

So yeah, that rustling in the leaves might not be exactly what Armin's hoping it is.

( ugh... isn't it a shame repel doesn't work on people, he thinks, as he stands. these trainers can be so insistent. armin doesn't pocket the ball in his hand, but he doubts he can win this prospective battle, either. harun is... harun, a magikarp of all things, and mika's endurance won't mean much against high level pokémon. or multiple pokémon, for that matter. how large is this trainer's roster? )

That's, ah, generous. But I should go...

No way! You can't just leave!

[ He's been doing so-so leveling up his... one Pokemon. But battling wild Pokemon only does so much. A trainer battle would be so much better!

So totally disregarding Armin's wishes, he tosses his Duskull out. ]

Come on, let's do this!

[throatwash]

Sorry, Mika.

( he sighs, releasing the pokéball. mika hops from one foot to the other. — shakes her tension from her feathers and raises her wings. armin won't need to order the sand attack. it's a natural defense for a pidgey. )

[chickshades]

[ Sand attack. Awesome! With the ability Levitate, Duskull won't be affected! Plus, it's a normal-type move anyway so yeah, he's got this in the bag.

'Cept that Bandou's only aware of how Sand Attack functioned in the first game. Things have been slightly revamped since then. Thus, the attack hits dead-on. Dai-ichi! falls from his place in the air, rolling onto his stomach. ]

Eh..?!

[ Bandou's more than a little surprised. He grits his teeth, fists clenching. ]

That wasn't supposed to hit!

( wasn't it? the angle wasn't too high, and the pokémon doesn't appear transparent. — ah, but it must be a ghost to resemble the grim reaper. so it's immune to... armin isn't certain. some weaknesses are more intuitive than others. and regardless: )

Mika, tackle it!

[chickshades]

What?! NO it's my turn!!

[ He has no idea why that normal move hit and the only damage dealing attacks he's got, currently, are both ghost-type... OH! But wait, Night Shade can still hit normal-types! ]

Quick Dai-ichi!! Use Night Shade!

[ Dai-ichi! floats back up, a little wobbly in the air, but rather than following orders, the Duskull spins around to look at his owner. He's flailing his arms apparently trying to convey that nooo that doesn't work anymore! when he gets tackled full on. ]

[throatwash]

( ouch. he isn't certain if he overestimated this trainer, or underestimated mika, but either is something of a pleasant surprise. still, mika used too much force in her attack, and when she circles to wait another order, she tilts to her right. armin frowns. )

We can stop, you know.

[chickshades]

No! I can't lose my first trainer battle!

[ And not in such an embarrassing defeat, too. This is so much worse than just coming in a hair behind someone! Well, at least maybe his complaints won't sound petty this time? ]

Drawing isn't losing.

( well... it depends on who is asking, isn't it. eren wouldn't surrender. but eren isn't here, either, and armin knows when to admit his weaknesses. he glances toward mika. — circling and waiting. her tilt is improving while he waits, but if she attacks in such force again, he isn't certain her balance will survive. )
