Sometimes people leave you, halfway through the wood.

Who: Alphonse Elric, Envy, Greed, and Wrath.
Where: An ill-fated bakery. All around Goldenrod. The freakin' basement.
When: August 11th onwards! This is a catch-all.
Summary: The world has been pretty good to the various monsters and serial killers hailing from Amestris, but one particular villainous wild child has yet to be rehabilitated.
Rating: PG-13 for talk of abuse, manipulation, brainwashing, all that good stuff.

That horrible feeling you have inside right now? That's how you can know you're not bad. Bad people don't feel sick at the thought of causing pain. That's how I know I'm not bad. I once hurt someone that loved me, very badly. I killed him. Because...Master wanted him to die and when she decided that, he was dead already. But that I did that...it makes me feel sick and awful inside.

[She hasn't expected that this little session would get so deep and touch on serious subject matters, but Lust isn't going to abandon a path that looks to be a clear and helpful one. And maybe it will help Wrath come to realize she isn't the boogyman he thinks she is.]

We're not bad. She was. We were bad because we followed her lead. Now we can make whatever choice we'd like. I want to be good. And I want you to have the chance to be good, too. We all deserve that.

[Except maybe Pride.]

_{[HE HADN'T EXPECTED IT EITHER. He hadn't expected it to happen at ALL.]

[He shrinks into a crouch, evidently trying to look as small as possible. He feels guilty as hell and he doesn't even know WHY.]}

... You're trying to trick me.

_{[He has said this to her (and Envy, and Al, and Scar of all people) before, but it doesn't even sound accusing at this point. It sounds like nothing more than what it is, which is a VERY confused and unsettled child trying desperately to cling to the only things that seemed to make sense to him before.]}

No.

[Lust stays where she is and only shakes her head. She feels very tired, from the sudden emotional outpouring. And Wrath just looks miserable and frightened.]

No tricks. I'm done with that, too. I know I've done it before, but I swear to you on my humanity that I'm not now. She's the one that tricked us both. She was very, very good at it.

_{[More floor-patting. He really doesn't like having these traitorous thoughts. Not at ALL.]

[What if Master can hear those thoughts?]

[She's not HERE but that never really seemed to matter when it came to knowing when one of her servants had been misbehaving.]}

... Don't say 'was' like she's gone.

She'll come here.

You'll see.

_{[But for the first time, he doesn't bother trying to sound smug about that. Because he wants it just as little as any of them do, and he's too tired and mixed-up to make the effort to hide it anymore.]}

And so what if she does? There's no alchemy here, she can't hurt us. And our friends, our real friends, wouldn't let her. You have people that care about you very much here, Wrath.

[She slides down a single step, slowly.]

Like Ralph. I know he's your friend. He's my friend, too. Do you think that tiny, scrawny, sick little woman could stand a chance of getting anywhere near you against big, giant, strong Ralph?

--You know Ralph?

_{[He knows Lust and Envy work in Joker's circus but he didn't really think that they like... talked to anybody. Go figure.]}

[Lust nods.]

Ralph and I are good friends. We see each other regularly - we're even exercise partners. And I know he cares about you a great deal. He'd never let someone like her hurt you again. And neither would we.

_{[And for the very first time, one of the deepest darkest fears that Wrath hadn't uttered anywhere but in the confines of a literal nightmare comes out.]}

She'd kill him.

_{[There is not the slightest ounce of wicked glee or satisfaction in his voice. Only terror and, more importantly, certainty.]}

She'd find a way to do it.

She would.

No. No, Wrath, she wouldn't. She has no power here, just that sickly dying body she's trapped in.

[Lust's voice is soft now, as comforting as she can make it. She'd go to him, if she thought he'd allow it. But she knows he won't so she hugs her knees and stays on the steps.]

And no one would help her. We're well known, all of us. You, me, Envy, Greed...if she ever ended up here, most of this world would be against her. She only had all the power she held back home because she spent centuries setting it up so she did. Here she has no alchemy, no slaves, no armies, no allies. She'd be like a bit of dust on the wind - powerless.

_{[She's doing extremely well. Better than she probably expected to do.]

[But of course now she's coming up against the same wall that the others all had-- the impenetrable barrier of Dante's supposed invulnerability. Which is what happens when you induct a non-human newborn in the body of an eight-year-old into an ancient order built entirely around the near-worship of a single individual who held them in her palm like ants. Logic didn't even come into play. Wrath had simply eaten up every piece of Dante-fearing rhetoric he'd been fed by the other Homunculi and that had been that.]

[So he shakes his head.]}

No, no, no, she would. She'd find a way.

You know she would!

_{[It's still not accusing, his tone. If anything, he sounds almost like he's appealing to her logical side just like he would have back when they were on the same 'side'. 8( DON'T LIE, LUST! YOU KNOW DANTE IS ALL-POWERFUL!]}

She'd try. And she'd believe she could, but that's because she's used to being powerful. She would be without resources or allies, with forces acting strongly against her.

[Lust knows that shattering Wrath's beliefs about Dante isn't going to be easy. But she's made this much progress. If nothing else, Wrath will have time to think about what they talk about.]

I've given this a great deal of thought, Wrath. What would happen if she were to show up here. And there's no way for her to hurt us. Not really. If she ever tried to come into this house, I would kill her myself. I don't want to hurt anyone anymore, but I'd make an exception for her.

_{[It won't be easy at all. But progress HAS been made!]

[He puffs quietly as she talks, unable to help the tears welling up in his eyes.]

[Why aren't any of them as scared of her as he is? Why do they think they'd win in a fight with her???]}

... She'll kill all of us.

And she'll hurt us first, a lot.

You know that's what'll happen.

You all know that's what'll happen!

No, we know that won't happen. Envy and Greed have known her a very, very long time. Much longer than you or I - I'm really not much older than you, you know. She has limits. She has weaknesses. She's only a human woman. And she's relied on her alchemy, she doesn't know how to physically fight.

[Lust slips down one more step.]

Half of our friends could snap her like a twig. I could suffocate her just by sitting on her.

_{[He's too busy being afraid of the Actual Boogeyman Dante to care much about Lust slowly slipping down the stairs towards him. He's rocking back and forth a little, nervously.]

[At this point, he's been convinced that none of his ex-allies-- or ex-enemies are trying to deliberately lie to him. They must really, truly believe what they're telling him. Which is why the next words out of his mouth are a tiny--]}

You're wrong.

_{[--instead of "You're lying."]}

I don't think I am. I think it's going to be alright.

[She doesn't come all the way down, just a few steps to be closer to him. She doesn't protest any further, either, she's said enough for now.]

Would you like Guttle to spend the night with you? I'm sure he'd like that.

_{[His eyes flick to the spherical seal.]}

... You'd let him?

_{[... Well, Wrath, you DID just have a whole conversation with her about how locking up your Pokemon or not letting them be with other people would be cruel...]}

Of course. My room's full of evolved Eevees right now anyway, I think he could use the break from them.

[Guttle rolls back and forth and claps his flippers in agreement. Lust closes her notebook and stands, smoothing down her skirt.]

He can come down and stay with you whenever you'd like, as long as we're home. Is there anything I can bring you, while I'm up?

_{[Why is she being nice? Even when they were on the same side, this is just... NOT consistent with Wrath's experiences with her.]

[All the same, even with Guttle's happy reaction bringing a very slight quirk to the sides of his mouth... her offer makes his heart clench.]}

... I miss my Pokemon...

_{[He says this rather than straight up ASK her to bring them to him... because he knows she won't, or more likely, probably can't. None of the people in this house were willing to risk the awful goblin child in their basement having access to his own team of magical animal friends.]}

[....oh. Lust's face falls and she wraps her arms around herself. He can't be given back his Pokemon, not yet. No matter how promising this little visit has gone, they just can't risk it. But maybe there's something that can be done.]

I'll talk to the others. It isn't fair that you have to be kept apart like this, but sometimes things that are necessary aren't fair. Maybe we can bring one down to visit with you.

[With them, and their own teams to keep an eye on everything. Something very, very supervised.]

_{[He spent her brief talk on the subject of fairness looking morosely downwards and scratching the floor with one finger, but at the offer, Wrath looks up at her at last. His big, wounded, weirdly-blue-for-a-homunculus eyes probably aren't helping those latent caring feelings she's starting to get.]}

Really?

[Lust nods. She's not used to these strange protective feelings Wrath is currently bringing out in her. But he's so sad and little, and he can barely understand any of what's happening to him. It makes her stomach twist.]

Really. If you can promise me that you won't try and attack us.

[Not that it would do any good, even if this does happen, Wrath's single pokemon would be outnumbered vastly. But it's about establishing trust.]

_{[He sits up, nodding. By offering something he really wants, Lust has commanded his near-total obedience, at least for THIS encounter.]}

I'll be good, I won't bite.

_{[He pauses, counting on his fingers.]}
