soundmind: (Read ► Can I marry books)
Maka Albarn ([personal profile] soundmind) wrote in [community profile] route_10652016-01-01 02:46 pm

How long have we been waiting for the sequel?

Who: Maka + everyone that is interested in the book club gathering
Where: Goldenrod bookstore/cafe (bookafe?)
When: 1/1/16; mid morning
Summary: At long last Maka has decided to hold another official book club meeting; this time in Goldenrod considering it's more accessible to people in Johto. Naturally she's invited everyone that would be interested in coming and has set up transportation accordingly.
Rating: PG at the most I guess?? For language at worst, or really bad plot twists
Log:

[New year, new things to look forward to…new books to read, hopefully. Since it's not her own house, Maka doesn't have to set up too much except bringing what books she already owns and is able to carry. They're all gathered up at a table towards the back with a sign specifically posted up reading "Johto Chapter Book Club."

The couple that runs the shop has said they didn't mind the meeting taking place there, at least that's what Kaneki said and Maka trusts his word. It makes sense, anyway, if they're in a bookstore that's also a café, people can more readily get something to eat or drink that they want without any guesswork from Maka. As usual, she's prepared and made sure everyone who might be interested in coming is aware of it and able to have transport over, though Maka still doesn't have an actual idea of what they should be doing in the book club.

Suggestions and discussions might make sense, so if anyone asks she'll say that.]

samsa: (Grin □ you say that to all the boys)

[Ah...so it's been around for a long time, but he hasn't had it long...

Kaneki nods a little, shifting the book in his grip that he carried with him.]

I see. I actually have a book with me here that I had back home, too. It's one of my favorites, written by my favorite author Takatsuki Sen.

[Curiosity gets the better of Dipper.]

What's it about? And is it in English?
samsa: (Bluffing □ with a forked tongue)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-07 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Er...it's in Japanese, actually, but it's a story about a serial killer and her son. It's called The Black Goat's Egg. The serial killer's alias is the "Black Goat", and her son is...well, the egg.
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ Speed)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-07 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Why are you talking about serial killers with a 12 year old kid?]

But.... goats don't lay eggs. Except here for some reason.
samsa: (Watching □ and judging with espresso)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-07 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Because he asked what the book was about?]

Well...it's more of a metaphor than anything else. It doesn't mean it literally; he's just her 'egg' because he's her son, you know?
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ And a government for hire)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-08 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[WHY... do people do things like this in books. It's confusing sometimes. Adults.]

I don't think I want to read a book about serial killers with a weird name like that.
samsa: (Nervous □ which was it again?)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-08 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ouch.]

W-well...that's alright. I think a book like Monochrome Rainbow would interest you more anyway...it's a collection of short stories written by the same author.

But ah...I do have some other books from here in my bag, if you'd like to look at those...?
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ Breathing down your neck)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-08 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Monochrome.... Rainbow... what was the point of a black and white rainbow? Adults.]

So more about serial killers? [Do you have a type, Kandykane?] Are any of them paranormal or mysteries?
samsa: (Deadpan □ tsukiyama away with you)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-09 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Kaneki breathes a heavy sigh, trying to keep his expression level.]

They write some mysteries, yes...the stories in Monochrome Rainbow are all pretty varied, but these aren't about serial killers.

[These aren't good candidates anyway because they're all in Japanese.]

Anyway...have you ever heard of The Silence of the Lambs, Dipper-san?
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ Lenny Bruce is not afraid)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
[Sorry, bro, but he can't read Japanese.

As for that title-]

I've seen the movie! Is the book any good? I heard it's way better than the movie, but I'm too young to check it out from the library.
samsa: (Study □ but only two have checked it out)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-09 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
The book is much better. It's very good, and I'd recommend reading it when you're old enough.

[But he's also biased because books. As he says that, though, he leans over too pull out another book from his bag.]

Johto's version is a bit tamer than the real thing, though. Silence of the Mareep.
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ Eye of a hurricane)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-09 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
[He'll be 13 in August! Is that old enough?]

That sounds like a kids book.

[Don't insult him.]
samsa: (Pleasant □ nice chatting with you)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-09 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Maka got it for me for my birthday, and I think she has good taste in books. I've only just started reading it, and it isn't quite like the version I'm used to...but it's pretty good so far.
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ Strength)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-09 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a movie based on it?

[He has yet to find a single decent movie in this place.]
samsa: (Pause □ pardon?)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-09 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm...not sure, actually. Maybe?

[The movies he's seen here so far are...pretty bad.]
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ It starts with an earthquake)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-09 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Is it as bad the the Pokemon version of The Thing? Because it was pretty predictable that was a Muk right from the beginning. They should have used a bug for it, not a puddle of sludge.

[If there was forums he could get into, he'd complain about all of these things.]
samsa: (Half Grin □ oh it's nothing really)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-09 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen either of those...but that sounds more comical than scary.
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ Fine)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-09 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
It would have been even scarier if they had a Ditto. The Thing could take on the shape of its victims, assimilate others, and become a horrible mess of different body parts that it would use to tear apart and assimilate more victims.

[The real one is awesome.]

The Muk just kind of flopped on the people and "assimilated" them.
samsa: (Blank □ I borrowed this coat)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-09 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Huh...I guess that's probably as graphic as they could get away with.

Everything is so PG-13 here. Even slasher movies.

[But anyways, back to books.]

How badly are books censored here?
samsa: (Eyepatch □ my eye does this thing)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-09 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm...pretty badly. I'm not sure if you could call is censoring exactly, though...it's just that everything's been replaced with Pokemon.
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ And aeroplanes)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-10 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
[That sounds like something Mabel would do but with unicorns.]

So.. they're kids books then.
samsa: (Fond □ oh no it's cute)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that depends on your definition of a "kids book". Do you think Pokemon are just for kids?
sneezelikeakitten: (♠ Serve yourself)

[personal profile] sneezelikeakitten 2016-01-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
No. Some of those descriptions are not for kids. There's Pokémon that eat people! Why would people catch those?!

[Never going to catch a man eater.]
samsa: (Nervous □ Im doing the hand thing)

[personal profile] samsa 2016-01-11 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
The same people who swim with sharks for a living, I suppose.

If you think about it, though...a lot of Pokemon could eat a person, if they really wanted to.
