For some reason they can't carry people long distances until they learn the move Fly. It's weird, I know.
Are you a Trainer or a Breeder? If you're a Trainer, beating Falkner gets you the badge that lets you use Fly, though not the HM to teach it to your Pokemon. If you're a Breeder, I think you don't need the badge for that. Either way you can borrow mine to teach your Pokemon until you get to Cianwood and beat Chuck for his badge and the HM.
