If only they had Appa... [Active/Open]

Who: Toph Bei Fong, Aang, and anyone else they may run in to on Route 29.
Where: Route 29
When: Today, and the next few days too.
Summary: Toph and Aang are on their way to meet up with Katara.
Rating: PG?
Log:

Toph didn't pause at all when she walked out on to Route 29. She could feel Aang near her, and her Sandshrew, Melon Lord, was also at her side. She could also feel a lot of other creatures in the trees and running around in the grassy areas, but she wasn't too concerned about them. They were all pretty small, so they couldn't be too hard to avoid. Even if they did run in to any of them, she was sure Melon Lord could take them out.

"It's bad enough we lost Appa once. I miss having him." Not only was it convenient and terrifying to fly, but Appa was a member of the team, or the Gaang, as Sokka would put it. Toph kept going though, Melon Lord following close behind.

"Yeah, me too," Aang said, his usual cheer fading at the thought. "People told me that you don't really lose any time while you're here, though, so at least he won't have to wait any longer." He paused, not sure whether or not the next question was safe to ask (from a temporal standpoint, at least). "We do get him back, right? And he's okay?"

The thought of Appa was enough to distract Aang from a few details that were perhaps more relevant to his situation. Such as the quiet sound of a few seeds that had once been caught on his shirt but had finally succumbed to gravity. Or the small "Pi, pi," that was coming from somewhere quite close by.

"A bird?" Aang looked back, finally spotting the Pidgey. "Hey, I wonder... these Pokemon are supposed to have bending powers, right?" So far, neither Melon Lord nor Char had shown any indication of this, but then again, there hadn't been much need for them to. "So maybe birds have airbending abilities."

"" Char was even slower in noticing the Pidgey than Aang, but he was just as curious, if not more so. He drew quite close to it, and the Pidgey let out at a sharp cry.

"It said in the book you're supposed to fight them, and then you throw a ball at it, like ours came in. Do you think I should give it a shot?"

"Okay, Char, um... wave your tail at it?" Aang directed, hoping the flame would do something. It didn't, although the Pidgey did seem slightly... calmer? That didn't stop its next move, which was to tackle Char quite hard in the chest. The little Charmander staggered back, and Aang began to get a bit worried.

"Alright, so you can't really firebend yet..." His eyes flickered to Char's small yet sharp claws. "Can you scratch it maybe?"

"" Char clawed the Pidgey, causing a much stronger reaction than Aang had planned. The little bird fell to the ground, looking beleagured.

"And now the ball..." Aang threw it cautiously, but luckily it hit. It shook one, two, three times... and stopped. "I did it!"

"They're supposed to fight other ones, and then they get stronger. It sounds kind of hard on them, though." Aang released the Pidgey, which still looked rather tired. "Lessee... there's supposed to be some kind of medicine in here..." He rummaged around the bag, finally pulling out a Potion, and applying the spray to the Pidgey. "Oh! I think it said if you point the communicator things at them, it'll tell you more, too."

"Totally," Aang agreed. He found the Pokegear and pointed it rather awkwardly at the Pidgey. Pidgey, the Tiny Bird Pokemon, it intoned. Aang listened to the rest of the entry, and was pleased to see that the next screen had more personalized information.

"It says she's a girl," he told Toph. "Hm... I think I'll name you Kotane."

"" the newly christened Kotane chirped. She hopped up onto Toph's extended hand, watching her carefully.

((OOC note: 'Kotane' is a bit of a pun in Japanese; it means 'small seed', but it's also a portmanteau of 'koto', pigeon, and 'tane', seed, which is how a lot of Pokemon names are formed.))

Aang pointed his own Gear at it, which resulted in rather less information, but luckily the gender was still displayed. "It says she's a girl," he reported. "What are you going to name her?"

"Oh, yeah." Aang's cheeks reddened slightly. "We should probably hurry, then. C'mon, Kotane." Kotane tilted her head at him and then fluttered up to his shoulder, giving him what was presumably a friendly peck on the ear.
