Summary: Souji's rescue group gets into Ecruteak for gym fighting and a one-day break. Cue rest, relaxation, and RUNNING AROUND.

[ okay, so this hasn't been the cheeriest of expeditions. Not that Rise hasn't tried to keep group morale as high as possible, but there are limits to what one can do when one's senpai is sleep-deprived and antsy to keep going forever.

Of course, the whole team's all a little AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH when it comes to Souji, but the Pokémon do need a break, and badges do need to be earned to get the whole group to the Ice Path in enough time. Which means, now that they're in Ecruteak, they have a day to rest up.

And by resting up, that's code for "running around to pick up a few more supplies, running to the inn, running back out after her Furret to keep her from challenging Morty to another showdown, leaving aforementioned Furret in the inn, running to the Center to check on her Rapidash, running back to harass the others and do any cheering for Gym battles, and finally running back out to go get more food."

This also includes finally ceasing running to play a short game of catch with a Flareon, who takes some mischievous delight in trying to trip up the occasional innocent bystander in the process. You may have seen glimpses of her every so often, but Rise finally seems semi-stationary when she calls her fluffy fire friend back for petting. APPROACH? ]

[ Rise lowers her head. Shamefacedly- ]

I could deny it 'til I died, but what was the point? I knew... she was right, that I really did hate having to act like that, that everyone thought I was just a fake ditz-- and that I was hurting both of us by saying it wasn't true.

So I... apologized to her.

... would apologize to something that had just been threatening her life. [and it isn't until he finishes with the thought, softly and just a tad incredulous, that he realizes that he said it out loud.]

[ she seems a tad defensive-- but then again, it was herself she was facing. ] If I know I messed up, the least I could do was apologize--

[and here you get a rare view of a flustered Fuji as he draws back, picking up his spoon and stirring at his coffee listlessly. almost as though he's embarrassed by his words.]

Oh, no, I wasn't demeaning it. It...

[ she's aware that it's a little odd. Accepting your Shadow was one thing. Apologizing to it? But it had felt like the natural thing to do at the time, at a time when everything else was as unnatural as it could get. But she's less wary, because it's somewhat obvious that Fuji isn't mocking her for it. ]

[... struggling to put this to words. and he comes up with a soft laugh--]

It... sounds like something you would do.

[ she isn't quite sure how to take that - she isn't overly apologetic, he knows that - but again, she won't misconstrue it as humoring. After a few seconds, she looks down at her cup again. At last, she smiles. ]

Maybe you know me better than I thought.

[... for a moment there, he had just been slightly tense, in wait of her words. but at the smile, the tension drains away, just a little.

a bit of a chuckle.]

[and, a shake of his head] Did 'she' accept your apology?

She turned into a Persona - what we use to fight - and I joined in my first battle about thirty seconds later, so she must have.

A 'persona', huh. So once you accepted the part of yourself that you rejected, it became your strength. [and here, he smiles to himself.] I think Jung would've been pleased.

That's the gist of it. It really does a number on you, though.

I'd imagine. But what doesn't kill you generally makes you stronger.

Or at least enough to tide you over until you meet the next thing that wants you kill you.

[ wryly ] I didn't do that much fighting, but there were a lot of those things.

Mm, then what did you do?

Scanning and support. Finding the victims, guiding the team through the dungeons, analyzing the shadows-- you know, weaknesses, what they were strong against, that sort of thing.

[............. it suits her]

Would you be terribly offended if I compared you to Atobe just now?

I-- what?

[ she's already looking righteously indignant. ]

Then I'll save that analogy for another time.

But really, if that's what your 'persona' can do, then it certainly explains quite a few things.

Mm, the way you act around others. It's as though you've seen them right through, and it doesn't quite bother you.

That sort of thing... [ pausing to take a swallow of her tea ] I think I've always been like that. It was just that I started being able to sense their hearts when I got Himiko, and after that... well, everyone's got something they won't talk about. If I was seriously bothered by that, I'd be a hypocrite.

[ and another pause. ] ... So I guess I should apologize to you, too.

[... a pause, then.] What for?

What I said about you, when I got mad... it hurt you, didn't it?

Maybe. [and here he stirs his coffee again, before taking a sip.] But when it comes down to it, wasn't I the one who pushed you to that?
