HOENNWEEN: INTRO CHALLENGE LOG

Who: Hoennween Plot Participants!
Where: Tohjo Falls!
When: Wednesday, October 29th
Summary: You've just received a call from a mysterious voice asking you to come help save the world. This is Day One of The Rest Of Your Life™ — the introductory skirmish that will determine your field position for tomorrow and the advantages you'll have going in to the fight against Archie and Maxie.
Rating: PG-13 in general; please mark threads that go higher accordingly!
Log:

YOU ARE HERE. YOU'RE FIGHTING THESE GUYS AND ALSO POSSIBLY THESE GUYS. THEY'RE NOT HAPPY TO SEE YOU.

ETA: AND THIS IS YOUR BACKGROUND MUSIC!

KEY:
GRAY areas in the north are a range of mountains that form a natural barrier around part of the Tohjo plain where the Elite Four's resort is located. It is both difficult and dangerous to get up into the mountains proper, but this seems to be the direction from which most of the Team Magma Grunts are entering the area.

GREEN areas in the southeast and southwest are densely-packed forested areas interspersed by lakes and rivers that seem to be feeding into the main waterway into the area. It is both difficult and dangerous to venture into the woodlands proper, but this seems to be the direction from which most of the Team Aqua Grunts are entering the area.

• The BLUE area in the south is the massive lake that feeds the eponymous falls that give Tohjo its name. You will also find Team Aqua Grunts here taking great care to hold control of the lake, if you're interested in engaging in a water battle.

PINK diamonds in the east and west are the sites of massive formations of Mysterious Plot Crystals™ jutting up from beneath the surface; the Grunts on both teams appear somewhat wary of these growths, so they will be keeping a reasonable distance from them while still doing their best to protect them.

• The BROWN rectangle dead-center in the map is...the Elite Four's resort. Not exactly what you might call a fortunate place to be located, but it's easy to see why this might be considered prime real estate for both teams. You're likely to find members of both Team Aqua and Team Magma hanging around here, so be cautious!

A FEW OTHER SETTING NOTES:

• As per Arceus's summon, there will be Gen VI Pokemon joining the battle on their own! You may NPC these Pokemon, within reasonable limits; you may not capture them in Pokeballs, and they are still wild so they will not take commands from characters the way a captured Pokemon would from its trainer. However, they do recognize that the portaled-in humans are fighting on roughly the same side as they are, so they won't attack player characters and might occasionally come to their aid if need be — you're free to NPC them as you like for purposes such as this.

• The aforementioned Gen VI Pokemon can be any Pokemon that swarmed during September, plus any of their evolved forms. They've had several weeks in the wild to get buff and settle in; now you can see what they've got to show for it!

• You may NPC the Team Aqua and Team Magma Grunts as you see fit; either one can be found anywhere on the map, though Team Magma will be more highly-concentrated in the northern areas of the map, and Team Aqua will be keeping more to the south.

• There is no restriction on how many Aqua and Magma Grunts you may fight.

• You may fight members of both teams on this log if you so choose; you are not required to pick just one or the other to focus on for this particular log.

• You may forego Pokemon battling entirely and simply beat up the Grunts with physical violence yourself. If you KO a Grunt, they will white out and be warped to the nearest Pokemon Center back down in the regions proper, where they will be arrested by an officer of the Kangaskhan Police.

FOR CHARACTERS INTENDING TO USE HONEDGES LIKE WEAPONS: due to the high volume of questions we have received on this topic (it's a popular inquiry!), we want to clarify for this Pokemon in particular —

If you choose to use a Honedge as though it were a traditional sword, the most that the Honedges will allow might be slapping the grunts with the flat side of the blade. They are still opposed to attacking/killing humans, opponents or not, and if you try to stab an opponent with them, you're going to get a really obstinate ghost sword going incorporeal and ineffectively going through them. There's also the fact that you're grabbing them by the head and swinging them around — they won't like that very much.

PLEASE NOTE: if you intend to use a Honedge in this manner anyway, we may ask that you experience light IC consequences for it later in the plot! We're not barring you from getting your sword skills on with your Honedges; we're simply pointing out that there may be natural outcomes that follow from those choices.

UPDATE: if you would like to interrogate the grunts, check here for information you can learn from them!

~

☆ THE NUMBER TO MEET OR BEAT IS 50 PARTICIPANTS.

REMEMBER: IF YOUR CHARACTER DOES NOT POST TO THE INTRO CHALLENGE LOG AT LEAST ONCE
(AS A TOP-LEVEL COMMENT OR IN RESPONSE TO SOMEONE ELSE'S TOP-LEVEL COMMENT)
BEFORE 9:00 PM EST on OCTOBER 28, THEY WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD THE 50-PARTICIPANT GOAL!

Yes. She... should be fine.
unkinder: (☆ waiting for an answer I don't know)

[personal profile] unkinder 2014-10-29 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
[His gaze briefly flicks over to the Gardevoir, who keeps her attention on the battles going on, as instructed.]

She'll be fine. But you should send some of yours out anyway.

[His Pokemon might be stronger now, but they aren't all entirely up to par yet. And he'd be lying if he said he wouldn't like to see some other psychics fighting alongside his own, just to get a better idea of how they perform.

...because that's the priority, here.]
exeggutorhead: (challenge accepted)

[personal profile] exeggutorhead 2014-10-29 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Greed's around here somewhere, he found me earlier. He's been helping me out.

[Wait Heather is riding a horse around he should probably warn her.]

...hey, if you're riding your horse, watch out for any giant holes in the ground. We've been digging them to catch these morons in.

[And from the slightly manic, satisfied look he's got when he says that, it's been working.]
foolishwren: and i never will. i've already forgotten what you said, good bye forever (Wow ive never thought about it like that)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2014-10-29 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
APPLEJACK!

APPLEJA-- ... whoa.

[The clip-clop of hooves grows louder and then halts abruptly as Heather, astride her Rapidash, comes to a halt behind the lasso-wielding ex-pony. She's.... she's kind of IMPRESSED, honestly.]

... I'd answer her questions if I were you. She can get kinda crazy.

[SHE'LL PLAY GOOD COP, YOU PLAY BAD COP.]
foolishwren: whether it be pacman world pacman, or ghostly adventures pacman.... (Guys no! Pacman wouldnt want us 2 fight!)

[personal profile] foolishwren 2014-10-29 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
[The cry successfully alerts Heather to the fact that she almost just ran somebody over.]

[Carousel clatters to a halt, snorting loudly, and Heather twists around in the saddle, planting a hand on the Rapidash's rump (and only barely flinching when it encounters the flickers of flame running down the horse Pokemon's back-- she's been working on that phobia of hers!) so that she can better see over her shoulder.]

[Is that friend or foe? She doesn't see a uniform...]

Hey!

You okay?
neededlassie: (smiling)

[personal profile] neededlassie 2014-10-29 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
[The great thing about Aqua Jet as a move is that it pretty much unquestioningly goes first.

Doubly so if the opponent didn't actually see it coming.

So being hit by an angry water weasel was if not a OHKO then pretty darn close, for whatever unfortunate pokemon she hit. The water dissipated and she put herself in front of Squirt and Shaun, obviously the faster of the two water-types.]

Thanks!

[Shaun was pretty cheerful for the middle of a battle. Then again, fighting grunts was exactly like the video game! And being the hero was pretty cool.]

Ready to kick some butt?
dreamsofahero: ([about more than just catching them all])

Asami certainly wasn't the only one attacking the crystals; a garchomp seemed to be quite thoroughly enjoying blowing them up nearby, while a lucario and gallade seemed to have started a game of "destroy some crystals, lure in some grunts with the fireworks, thrash said grunts, repeat" close at hand. Their trainer, however, seemed to be nowhere in sight.... until the garchomp succeed in toppling a rather large crystal in such a way that sent it falling towards one of the more crowded parts of the field. The lucario spotted it and let out a cry, though neither he nor the gallade was in a position to reach it in time...

"Just! Valiant!"

A certain silver-haired trainer was rushing across the field on his arcanine, and even as he shouted he raised a pair of pokéballs. The lucario and gallade were recalled, then in a single swift motion sent out again, this time leaping from their respective balls in the proper direction in what was clearly a well-practiced maneuver. An Aura Sphere and a Shadow Ball later, and the crystal exploded into harmless fragments and dust.

For his part, Sion allowed himself a brief sigh of relief, which the crystal-attacking trio promptly took as their cue to dash off to see what more havoc they could wreak.

[Not even looking. Those trainers are on fire, big whoop.]

...It's not like I can argue that you have powers right now, right?

[Since neither of them have these powers at the moment...]
irenicly: (♨ you're the one she's after)

[personal profile] irenicly 2014-10-29 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
[He feels a little funny about having this guy do all the work, but he knows better than to try and help with the one tiny Pokemon. The fact that there's only one Pokeball on his belt is proof enough that he's really inexperienced, but at least he looks satisfied.

This is a good thing, right?]

I take it you've been here for a long time.

I'm Banjou, by the way. Kazuichi Banjou.

[Look, it's in western order and everything!]
stitchedupbodyguard: (Huh?)

[personal profile] stitchedupbodyguard 2014-10-29 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
[The grunts have a few seconds to turn around and react before one of them has their feet kicked out from under them by Veronica, followed up by her Honchkrow engaging a few of the grunt's Pokémon.]

...Hmm? [She looks up and spots Maka.] Hey! Are you going to help?
awesmazings: (☼ her beauty)

[personal profile] awesmazings 2014-10-29 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Okay. You'll just have to tell her she missed out on all the fun!
ossifragant: (Ò the rain doesn't help)

[personal profile] ossifragant 2014-10-29 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
I thought so too.

[It's interesting, that much he knows.]

We have the weirdos in body sweaters and pirates. This place has a sense of humor about who the bad guy are, doesn't it?

[If they're fighting, it just makes things easier for Greed.]
glaciates: (EXCITED ❅ gonna ride a glacier brb)

[personal profile] glaciates 2014-10-29 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have been. I like it here though; it's way better than my life back home.

[Isaac turns back to Banjou, still grinning. He offers his hand.]

Isaac McDougal. What should I call you?

[He's not really sure he can pronounce your first name there, buddy...]
irenicly: (♨ you're back-steppin)

[personal profile] irenicly 2014-10-29 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
[He smiles politely. He's not sure if he likes this place better than home or not. It's certainly different! More in a positive way than a negative, but he doesn't exactly want to get into it.]

It's usually not too bad here. Except for whatever these guys are doing.

[He says motioning to the unconscious grunts.]

Banjou's fine.
glaciates: (HUH ❅ amestris is a circle isn't it)

[personal profile] glaciates 2014-10-29 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what they're doing here, but hopefully they aren't trying to take over Johto or something.

[He really wouldn't be surprised at this point.]

Banjou, then. Nice to meet you. Thanks for the ideas.
stitchedupbodyguard: (Just a prick)

[personal profile] stitchedupbodyguard 2014-10-29 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
[There was no awe in Veronica's eyes. Confusion, maybe.]

I suppose, but it seems like she's not enjoying being here.

[She gestured to the Gardevoir.]
me_first: (armed and... dangerous?)

[personal profile] me_first 2014-10-29 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose. I wonder if I can send her a message...

[Even a city guy like Blake can surely recognize the sound of hoofbeats.]

[Because they're there, and they're getting closer.]

[But first, a lanky white shape emerges from the underbrush. It's an Absol!]

[Who spots Blake and Steve and then freezes.]

[And while Veronica has her hands full, Ako is busy in the air, diving down to swipe at a few poochyena.

There's a loud splash behind Jimmy, and Baburu comes jumps out of the water, apparently victorious in his own fight. The Frogadier gives Jimmy a gauging look before sprinting off to help his trainer, as much of a ninja as Veronica was.

None of the pokemon are.

[He retorts calmly, looking over to Uchi, who quickly lowers her hands and steps over to Nagi's side. While she isn't comfortable, she's certainly no longer the trembling Kirlia she once was. She's tall and regal...but she still falls under the authority that Nagi seems to be able to command.]
foolishwren: there is a respectable amount of screaming. could have been called “guy in a screamy mask with a knife” but they took a risk with the title and I respect that. 7/10 (TITLE ACCURACY: "Scream" (1996))

[personal profile] foolishwren 2014-10-29 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
[What happens when a charging horse meets a rampaging bear?]

[Well, hopefully they both stop, because otherwise things could get ugly.]

[Carousel is a fairly calm and level-headed Pokemon, but even she can't avoid being startled at the sudden appearance of a FREAKIN' BEAR. With a whicker of alarm, she rears up slightly, making Heather grab for her neck to balance.]

WHOA!

WHOA, easy, Carousel, EASY!
loveisanopendoor: (Reassuring)

[You can practically see her eyes light up when she takes the sandwiches in her hands...]

So far, so good! Elsa and I make a pretty awesome team, though, so that's to be expected!
wing_attack: (unsure)

[Rachel backs off, and Tobias moves in front of her, holding up his hands.]

Sorry. We didn't mean to startle you.

[He looks at Rachel and gestures off to the side, and she continues on her merry battling way.]

Are you okay? I've been sticking to the ground for now but if you need to get airlifted out I can give you a hand.
irenicly: (♨ now you want it back)

[personal profile] irenicly 2014-10-29 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
[...Take over Johto?

That seems a little strange of a goal for an evil organization but alright then!]

No problem. Here's to hoping we can keep the road clear.

[And that's his cue to show up. Where Greed has been, no one knows, but it probably involved digging more traps if his expression is anything to go by.]

Heather!

[He's happy to see her, at least. That's a good thing because it means the three of them have finally caught up with each other.]

We're all together. What say we have a little fun?
