Summary: It comes down to two men, a girl and wondering what the other has on his mind regarding said girl.

It’s not that she was very trusting of people in the first place, particularly not of strange men she’d only talked to via Pokegear, but Tot was pretty certain she had nothing to fear from Mr. Maes. He reminded her a lot of her Papa--he didn’t talk to her like she was stupid, explained things to her so she could understand, and he had helped her out quite a lot with a problem. All of this was why she agreed to met him when he asked if she would.

Not that someone was going to let her go met some strange man alone however even if it was at a public place.

"I'll do that soon. My team likes fighting, so as long as they're enjoying themselves, they'll probably do well against the Gym Leader."

Then they could continue travelling and see what else was interesting or fun about Johto.

"Ah, so you're traveling and beating the gym challenge together, then~? Must be quite romantic, getting to see all the sights together, and cuddling under the stars at night!"

He may have overdone it a little, but young love is quite adorable, isn't it?

"Oh, Tot's not fighting at the gyms." As far as the rest of his statement...she might be blushing slightly as she looks back at Nagi again, because yes it is in so many ways.

"It's nice," he admitted while he felt himself blush a little. This was far more awkward than he'd expected it to me. Nagi gave Tot a small smile, reassuring her a little. At least this was better than people disapproving, right?

Oh, Maes approved just fine. So long as Nagi knew how to treat Tot properly, that is. From the looks of it, Nagi probably had that down fairly well. They seemed very happy together.

This was something he wanted to hear from Tot, herself. And he's got no problems asking her right in front of him. "He's treating you alright, then? Making you happy? Not doing anything horribly stupid?" His tone was light, but Maes does want a proper answer.

As for Nagi... when he thinks Tot isn't looking, Maes shoots Nagi a particularly threatening glance. Treat her right, it said. Or else.

She may not understand just what he means when he asks about Nagi doing anything stupid, but she does know one thing for certain--no matter what, Nagi would never hurt her.

"Tot's very happy. There's no place else she'd rather be than with Nagi."

He notices the look and his smile gets a little nervous. Nagi's not going to hurt her, but having someone worry this much is unexpected since the rest of her family back home is dead.

How did this turn into some sort of interrogation about his abilities?

Working in investigations meant that he's seen a lot of really morbid things. Particularly recently... even fathers could turn against their beloved daughters.

Which was why he just needed to make sure that everything was okay with Tot. Maes has grown rather attached to her, and were anything to happen...

... Well, nothing was going to happen. And that was that.

He gives a satisfied smile at Tot's answer. That was good. But just to make sure... "If you need anything, you know how to contact me."

She knows all about that, but her Papa never hurt her and she knows with all her heart that Nagi wouldn't either. Besides, now thanks to Schrient, she knows how to hurt him back if he does.

Not that she'll ever need it, or at least she doesn't think she will, but yes she knows how to get a hold of him so she nods in reply.

Now that he'd done his duties in making sure she would be safe, he gives a satisfied nod.

He pauses for a moment, and then a thought occurs to him. He gives the both of them a sheepish grin before asking, "If you've made it all the way out here, you must have started out at New Bark town, then?"

He'd never really gone past Route 34, himself, mostly due to the fact that his starter Pokemon weren't particularly strong enough just yet to brave fighting against Pokemon twice their level.

"What's it like~?"

"It's a long way and there are a lot of wild Pokemon." That's helpful right? But she doesn't really remember much about the trip other than that; it was mostly walking from town to town and trying not to slow their travel down.

"That's how Tot got a few of her Pokemon."

"I got some of mine that way too," he agreed. To demonstrate, he grabbed a ball from his pocket and let Tesla, the Ampharos, come out. "He started out as just a sheep."

He leaned in to examine the Ampharos. It... resembled a sheep a little, he supposed, though it was quite the stretch.

"Ah, I see, I see! Thanks for the information. I'm actually headed that way, myself, tomorrow."

"Going that way?" Even Tot knew that most people started out that way and traveled in the same direction. Why would someone being going the wrong way? And aren't all the Pokemon really strong going that way?

She's already seen Hughes' Pokemon and none of them are very strong yet. That's kind of scary.

He noticed it as well. "If you didn't start in New Bark Town, where did you start?"

This was a somewhat awkward position to be in, actually. But he'd needed information on the road ahead, and didn't foresee a threat asking Tot, of all people.

"I started here, actually." Maes was quite content in letting both of them come up with their own conclusions as to why exactly that is.

No one had ever told her there was another place to even start, or a particular reason someone might do so, so the information was tucked away as if there was nothing abnormal about it.

She was still rather worried about his Pokemon though, "The wild Pokemon are really strong out side of Goldenrod, especially if your Pokemon is a low level."

Nagi raised an eyebrow, but didn't question it. It wasn't up to him to challenge anything when Tot was around to wonder why he didn't believe a nice older man.

"He can either train them or run away," Nagi suggested to Tot.

Oh, he was well aware of how strong the Pokemon could be. Part of the reason why his Eevee was still so low leveled was because Maes could never venture too far out of Goldenrod before he encountered something twice her level.

"I've discovered these handy things called repels! Hopefully I've got enough to at least get me to the next town." He laughs, feeling a little silly about the whole thing, but what can you do when, apparently, being Team Rocket is suffering.

He's really glad that neither of them asked for details, though. Maes wasn't exactly sure how to explain this whole Team Rocket business quite yet.

While running away was a good idea, it seemed kind of silly especially for a grown up. At least the repels sounded like they would work.

"You should buy extra, just in case." It never hurt to have too many.

"Those work too," he said with a small chuckle. Nagi didn't know why he hadn't thought of them earlier.

Unfortunately, he'd run away once before, and it had felt incredibly silly to do. Maes was quite thankful for discovering those repels.

"Yes, and hopefully I'll get a chance to train this little one once we get somewhere a little less... dangerous." He gives his Eevee a reassuring smile. It wasn't her fault that she was still at such a low level. She was doing the best she could.

"Maybe you should try training with other people as well, that way you can stop the fight before she gets hurt." That would help if nothing else did, she would work on thinking of something else later.

"You should also walk really, really fast then to get to Azalea quickly."

"My team's strong," he offered as a way to help Hughes level up with a bit less trouble than he'd been having previously. Nagi assumed it would be good to stay on his good side.

"I've gone out and bought myself a bicycle, so that should help take a few days off the trip!" Though, it'd been a really long time since he'd ridden one, and honestly, it looked a little ridiculous. Even still, the one benefit to being a member of Team Rocket, it seemed, was that he got paid weekly without having to do much of anything...

Maes pauses at the offer from Nagi. "Oh? I wouldn't mind that, if you ever had some free time." He hadn't expected anything to that extent, honestly. But he certainly wouldn't turn down an offer if it were made.
