Summary: It comes down to two men, a girl and wondering what the other has on his mind regarding said girl.

It’s not that she was very trusting of people in the first place, particularly not of strange men she’d only talked to via Pokegear, but Tot was pretty certain she had nothing to fear from Mr. Maes. He reminded her a lot of her Papa--he didn’t talk to her like she was stupid, explained things to her so she could understand, and he had helped her out quite a lot with a problem. All of this was why she agreed to met him when he asked if she would.

Not that someone was going to let her go met some strange man alone however even if it was at a public place.

Even though he'd heard parts of the conversation and felt like he could trust this person who wanted to meet Tot, Nagi worried anyway. Plenty of people in the world, whatever world that was, acted nice only to get people to trust them and then things went horribly wrong. He didn't mind Tot going to meet him, but he'd stay nearby just in case.

He might not have his power here in Johto, but he could attack with his Pokemon. Nagi let the balls for Farfarello, Kaoruko, and Tesla rest in his pocket. They seemed like the most aggressive and suitable for protection. Once ready, he gave Tot a small smile.

Tot reminded him a little of Elicia. Not that he was trying to say that Tot was like a 3 year old; just that he wouldn't particularly mind if Elicia grew up to be like Tot. She was a sweet, caring girl. That was why he'd bought her a present for Christmas, fully intending on sending the present via Pidgey express a few days before Christmas.

But when he'd heard that she was in Goldenrod, Maes figured, why not just give it to her in person?

He carried the small box, holding a Lopunny plushie inside, under his arms as he walked to the place where they'd agreed to meet. It was always hard to see details through that tiny Pokegear device, but she wasn't hard to spot. And there was a man with her as well. Maes didn't mind the extra protection; he'd have done the same if Elicia wanted to go meet a man she'd only spoken to a few times.

Elsie, his Eevee, happily ran forward first, giving Tot's foot a friendly nudge, before turning to glance curiously at her companion.

"Yo!"

She didn't mind so much that Nagi came along, even if she did think she and her Pokemon could protect herself just fine. But it was still sweet and she wouldn't complain about any time spent with him.

Tot bent down to pet the little Eevee in greeting then looked up to wave at the other. "Yo?"

He nodded politely at the man and let Tot pet his Eevee. Nagi knew that they were friendly creatures; they also happened to be adorable even in Nagi's opinion.

With no idea what to say, he stood by quietly.

"I think she likes you."

He turns his attention to Tot's companion and extends his free hand out for a friendly shake. "Maes Hughes!"

"Tot likes her too."

Standing up, Tot smiles at Nagi and squeezes his hand for a moment before turning to face Hughes, "It's nice to see you."

Nagi shakes the offered hand, determined to look and see if that name's ever been mentioned badly on the Gear once they're alone. "Nagi Naoe. It's nice to meet you."

He's not sure what else to say, so he sits down to let them talk more.

He noticed the hand squeeze, and can't help but give Nagi a 'knowing' grin. Oh, so that's your relationship, eh?

"It is quite nice to meet both of you! I didn't know you had a boyfriend, Tot~" Before either of them have a moment to let that comment fully sink in, he's shoving the box under his arm toward Tot. "This is for you. It's a bit early, but I figured I might as well give it to you in person!"

Before she realizes there's a box in her hands she was trying to explain that he never asked her, it's not like she's ever hidden anything regarding Nagi but then there's a box being held out to her and Tot is thoroughly distracted.

"What's this?" It wasn't her birthday or anything so the idea of present didn't make much sense.

Wait, what? They've never decided to call it anything like that. Tot's too childlike for Nagi to think about what it might mean for people to think of them as boyfriend and girlfriend.

Before he can think of what to say, Tot has her present and Nagi can't help wondering what's in the box.

"It's a present!" His answer doesn't carry any sort of negative connotation, nor is he mocking her. Simply answering a question. "I suppose I could always give it to you on Christmas, but... presents are more fun when given in person, I think!"

She can get that it's a present, she just doesn't understand the what and why, but his answer does explain it a little. The actual problem is the last time she received a present she also received news that rattled her little world, so it should be understandable if she's just a little cautious regarding things.

It takes her a moment, and more than a few looks toward Nagi, to decide to open the box. The fluffy Lopunny plushy inside receives a quick hug as soon as Tot realizes just what it is.

Nagi smiles at both Tot and Hughes once the present is open. There's no way for him to know that she had a plush bunny and loved it very much at home.

He rests a hand on Tot's shoulder while she cuddles it. "You seem like a nice person, Hughes-san."

Maes can't help but feel a tad nervous as she opens the box. He'd only really spoken to her twice, and he wasn't sure exactly what she'd like. He gives a relieved laugh when she hugs the bunny. That means she liked it, right?

"I saw your Pokemon in the background the last time we spoke, and thought maybe you'd like it."

In a flash she's squeezing both the plushie and Hughes, a move which might not seem too odd for most but is usually reserved for those she's extremely closed to or feels comfortable with.

"It's wonderful! Thank you."

He knows it's strange for Tot to hug people, especially men she doesn't known, so when she feels comfortable enough to hug Hughes, Nagi's smile grows even more. If Johto can let her find people other than her old family she likes this much, he doesn't think he wants her to ever leave.

Maes, on his part, is quite used to displays of affection. If nothing else, he's probably dished out a lot of it -- both wanted and unwanted -- himself. So, the hugs comes at no discomfort or surprise.

"I'm glad!"

He notices Nagi's smile over Tot's shoulder, and makes a mental note to take the boy aside later and have a talk with him about this whole relationship thing.

But first, he flashes Tot a smile. "So, what are your plans now that you're in town?"

How could she not love it? Neu was too big to carry around so this was the most wonderful thing ever.

"Oh, we've been here for a little while, but Nagi has to beat the gym first."

"I'll do that soon. My team likes fighting, so as long as they're enjoying themselves, they'll probably do well against the Gym Leader."

Then they could continue travelling and see what else was interesting or fun about Johto.

"Ah, so you're traveling and beating the gym challenge together, then~? Must be quite romantic, getting to see all the sights together, and cuddling under the stars at night!"

He may have overdone it a little, but young love is quite adorable, isn't it?

"Oh, Tot's not fighting at the gyms." As far as the rest of his statement...she might be blushing slightly as she looks back at Nagi again, because yes it is in so many ways.

"It's nice," he admitted while he felt himself blush a little. This was far more awkward than he'd expected it to me. Nagi gave Tot a small smile, reassuring her a little. At least this was better than people disapproving, right?

Oh, Maes approved just fine. So long as Nagi knew how to treat Tot properly, that is. From the looks of it, Nagi probably had that down fairly well. They seemed very happy together.

This was something he wanted to hear from Tot, herself. And he's got no problems asking her right in front of him. "He's treating you alright, then? Making you happy? Not doing anything horribly stupid?" His tone was light, but Maes does want a proper answer.

As for Nagi... when he thinks Tot isn't looking, Maes shoots Nagi a particularly threatening glance. Treat her right, it said. Or else.

She may not understand just what he means when he asks about Nagi doing anything stupid, but she does know one thing for certain--no matter what, Nagi would never hurt her.

"Tot's very happy. There's no place else she'd rather be than with Nagi."

He notices the look and his smile gets a little nervous. Nagi's not going to hurt her, but having someone worry this much is unexpected since the rest of her family back home is dead.

How did this turn into some sort of interrogation about his abilities?
