Juneau Where She's Going?
Who: Carmen Sandiego (
doitrockapella) and a bunch of other people!
Where: Various locations in Johto, over the course of the week!
When: The week of January 26th
Summary: This week, her itinerary's loaded with more than just moving violations.
Rating: PG as a default; deviations from that will be marked!
Log:
People interested in interacting with Carmen or having her pay your character a visit at some point during this week, feel free to throw in a starter with a date and location for the thread! You can either write the starter yourself and I'll have her tag into it, or you can drop a top-level just with date and time and I'll come up with a reason for their paths to cross, either way. o/

[ He retrieves a white rook from under the couch. ]
Do you travel a lot, Carmen-san? You mentioned visiting Japan.
no subject
[A memory that makes her smile, unbidden. Those were good times, weren't they.]

[...Technically true, even if it's not her precise career path at this specific moment.]
no subject
What's it like? Chasing criminals is a dangerous business.
no subject
Dangerous is a good word for it. But it's rewarding enough. I like the challenge.
no subject
So you like the challenge, huh... Is that why you became a detective?
[ Beat. ]
...Ah, um, sorry for asking you so many questions! I'm just really curious.
no subject
It's fine; it's been a while since I talked about it with anyone, anyway, so I don't mind telling you about it.
[She picks up the black queen to play with as she talks, turning it over and over in her fingers.]
I started when I was about half your age. It was something to do and something I was good at; I'd always admired Sherlock Holmes as a child, so when the opportunity arose to join a local detective agency, I jumped for it.
[Beat.]
Also, I was better at solving mysteries than I was at making friends, so having something to keep myself occupied with was a bit of a relief.

You must've been some kind of child prodigy... That's amazing. I wish I had talent like that.
no subject
[Mostly because yeah, that's...basically it, yup.]
My agency...was a little something like your school, I think. They have a particular interest in exceptional children.

[DON'T MIND THE AFOREMENTIONED KADABRA JUST KIND OF POKING HIS HEAD IN AT THAT, EITHER, BECAUSE OH HEY DID YOU WANT SOMETHING — oh, no, evidently not.]
But those were the old days. Things are more advanced now.
no subject
Um, can you show me how to play now? I think we got a little off-topic there. [ He just. Motions to the chess board sitting all alone and unused on the table. ]
no subject
[With a friendly smile, she doesn't hesitate to turn her attention to the board.]
Are you familiar with how the pieces move, or should we go over that to start with?

no subject
[She gestures to the pieces one by one as she explains.]
The pawns can only move directly forward a single space, save for the very first time they move from their starting position, when they can move either one or two spaces. They can only threaten pieces located on a diagonal to their position.
The rooks move in straight lines; the bishops move along the diagonals of the color space they started on. Knights move in an L shape — two spaces ahead, and one to the side. They're also the only piece that can jump others when moving. The queen can move in any direction as many spaces as she wants, and the king can only move one space at a time. Does that make sense so far?
no subject
I think so.
no subject
[She gestures lightly to the rows of pieces in front of him.]
The first move is yours. Of your sixteen white pieces, ten can make valid first moves — your eight pawns, and your two knights.
no subject
[ He takes a moment to think it over before moving the pawn from d2 to d4. ]
no subject
[Without hesitation, she shifts a pawn of her own, the near mirror-image of his opening.]
Don't worry too much about what happens in the beginning; this stage of the game is usually about feeling your opponent out, setting up your later strategies, and vying for advantageous board positions. Since you're still just getting started, trial and error might be the best way to go; make moves, see what works and what doesn't, and develop a strategy as you see how the pieces are moving in relation to each other.

[ He takes another moment to think before he shifts a knight to c3. This is an accurate picture of how Naegi feels right now, btw. ]
