[To say that John was "looking forward" to his second date with Rose would be a gross understatement. He had barely been able to sleep the night before they left and ended up knocking on Rose's door at five in the morning because he'd finally given up on the notion of sleep entirely. Plus, weren't you supposed to leave early for camping trips?]

[Unsurprisingly, Rose hadn't expected him that early. She'd given him a very bleary look, stepped back into her room to give her clock a bleary look and then asked "...are we leaving 'lready?"]

[Even less surprisingly...she'd fallen right back asleep the minute they had both clambered inside Elliot and gone on their way. But that was okay. Because she had fallen asleep on John's shoulder and he had absolutely no qualms with that at all.]

[And then a few hours later, his excitement wore off and he too fell asleep. Wow, their trip was off to a great start already!]

[Elliot wasn't the fastest pokemon but fortunately, being a ghost, he didn't really need a lot of sleep. So their four day trip ended up taking only two. Once inside the forest, Elliot went back inside his ball for some much needed rest while the two kids shouldered their packs and began walking through the forest, hand-in-hand.]

[Surely this was going to be the best camping-trip-dino-hunt-vacation-date-extravaganza ever! ~~Also possibly the first ever, because seriously, who besides John would come up with something as crazy as this?~~]

[[At that she sighs and the smile falls.]]

You have gotten just a little too good at this for my comfort, John. You really should stop paying so much attention to me while I psychoanalyze others.

[[Bit of a weak chuckle, and then a nod.]]

Sorry. I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable. I just want to be able to help you when you need it.

So what's eating you?

Mm. [[Shrugging a bit, she takes her turn to curl up and rests her chin on her knees.]]

...various things I suppose. The idea of having a father, wondering what it's like to have parents who feel like parents and less like siblings...[[A bit of a pause as she wrestles with whether she wants to talk about Karkat or not.]]

First of all, if it's bothering you? It's important. And secondly, I'm guessing you're talking about Other father?

[[A soft snort, but then a nod.]]

I take it you've met him?

Mmm...yeah. We talked for a bit earlier today. He mentioned you once.

[[She perks up visibly at this. Not exactly one hundred percent happy or anything, but you can tell that made a little bit of difference to her.

...aaaand then she feels silly and looks away.]]

O-oh? Well I did mention you, Dave and Jade to him, so.

Yeah...he said that you were going to use the shortcut to get him to Goldenrod faster so that he could see us.

So what was it about him that bothered you? He seemed nice to me.

Mm, I'd like to do that yes. It would be nice, I think. And....nothing about him bothered me. He is a very, very nice person.

I just...I don't know. It's weird. It's weird having someone be so accepting of me so quickly, before he even knows me. And who wants to be my father if I'd let him, when I've...never had a father. And then mentioning that your other father is always there if you need him.....

[[Okay, off that topic. That's an unpleasant one.]]

I don't know. It's just strange.

I'll admit it...is a little weird. But is that really such a bad thing? Parents are supposed to love you unconditionally anyway. So, while it's weird that he would do that right off the bat, it's also...not. Because if he really is everyone's other father then that's what he's supposed to do.

It does. And I know that, I just...don't know how to deal with it. It isn't like my mother. He's not like her at all, and it's strange.

Well he's...your father right? So he shouldn't be like your mom. Because he's your dad...and dads and moms aren't the same thing. At least I would think they aren't. But you know, maybe you're overthinking it. Does there have to be a certain way to deal with it? Do you have to deal with it right now?

...I suppose that would make some semblance of sense. And I don't know John. That's just it.

I don't know if there is a certain way to deal with it. I have a feeling he wouldn't enjoy my normal passive aggressive displays of affection as much as mother does. But I don't really know what else to do. And no, I don't have to deal with it right now, but...not dealing with it now simply puts it off, and I will eventually have to deal with it.

I get the feeling he probably wouldn't enjoy that, no. But that's...not exactly what I meant by dealing with it. I meant...uh. [Give him a second, he has to think of how to put this.] Like...instead of stressing over it and thinking there's something you do or don't have to do, why not just...I guess not worry about it? That sounds like a horrible way to put it. But just take things as they come and deal with them one by one instead of trying to preemptively deal with the whole shebang after a single conversation with him.

[[She's just going to give him a look for a few moments, then shrug and glance forward once more.]]

...sounds far easier than I think it will actually be, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

It doesn't have to be difficult. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. But... [He moves his hand away from his shins, towards Rose.] if you do need help... [And resting his hand on top of hers.] I'm here.

[[Her eyes flick to his hand, then back forward, then back to his hand. Unfurling, she hesitates a moment before scooting a little closer to lean on his shoulder.]]

[For the record, Rose. He thought he was being terribly romantic when he did that. Like straight out of the movies, romantic. (Not that he didn't mean it with all his heart though, rest assured!) Are you charmed yet?]

...did you know Karkat is back?

[And there it is. Somehow he doesn't like knowing that he was right...]

Mm...yeah, I saw that. Had a little chat with him actually. Gamzee too. Good news, huh?

[Yet, he doesn't sound all that excited.]

[[And she can hear that. Maybe this isn't a good idea.]]

Mm. Better news that he will be keeping an eye on Gamzee.

Yeah. Which is good...because I think the last thing that everyone wants is a repeat of last time.

[No Rose, it's a good idea. He needs to talk about this. Even though he really doesn't want to and it'll be like pulling teeth to get him to admit anything.]
