I once lived with a man who kept one chained up in his backyard. They're...interesting.

As interesting as a four-foot levitating carnivorous snowflake that turns into water vapor to hunt can be, anyway.

[ Oh god, sometimes Pokéworld has the weirdest shit and manages to find new ways to surprise him. ]

So what does Audrey II reference to? The name doesn't mean anything to me.

It's a reference to a musical called "Little Shop of Horrors"; the main character works in a florist's shop and, over the course of the narrative, raises a plant that feeds on human blood. He names it Audrey II, after the girl he's secretly in love with — a friend of his, named Audrey.

[Which is kind of morbid, if you really think about it.]

That's kind of disturbing... [ He says, as he shows Carmen into the study. ]

Why did he raise a plant that feeds on human blood?

He didn't intend to, as the story goes. The plant just sort of appears out of nowhere one day, and he feeds it blood on accident, after he pricks his finger on a thorn and the plant reacts to it.

[...that is a really weird place to start explaining, hold up.]

The idea is that the plant is so rare, it's making the florist's shop famous. As the caretaker of the plant, that means it's also making the hero famous. The problem is, he has to keep the plant healthy as a result, because if the plant dies, so does the popularity — and he'll take all the blame for it.

...He doesn't start feeding it people, does he?

Do you really want me to answer that?

No, I don't. [ Naegi shakes his head. ] This is starting to remind me of the Monobear flower...

[ He trails off, not wanting to elaborate on his tales from murderschool. He then motions around the study, to the shelves with hundreds of books, the World's Nicest Couch™ and the chess board set up on a small table. Most of the pieces are on the floor as a result of Eevee-related shenanigans. ]

A botanical project from back home, I imagine.

[But since "back home" is a pretty iffy subject, let's just move right along to — oh, hey.]

Well, that's one way to topple the king, I suppose. It looks as though your furry friends disrupted your game.

Something like that. Apparently a Super High School Level Botanist engineered it...

[ You know what, let's just move on. ]

Ah, they didn't really disrupt anything, actually. I bought the game as an early birthday gift to myself the other day and I haven't done much with it yet. I don't even know how to play.

Oh?

[Well, look at that, now she's intrigued.]

And when is your birthday, exactly?

...It's on the fifth of February.

That's a week from Wednesday. You really didn't leave me much time to find you a present, did you?

Um, y-you don't have to find me a present, Carmen-san.

[doitrockapella]

Not even if it's chess lessons?

[She motions lightly to the board.]

Believe me, I like having kids to play fairy godmother for. It makes this place feel a little bit more like home.

[superordinary]

...Chess lessons would be nice. [ Then he can impress Kirigiri when she gets back! ]

I'm not exactly a kid, though. I mean, I'll be twenty.

You're too young for me to flirt with. That's "kid" enough for me.

[CARMEN...]

W...Wh-what?

[ CARMEN. ]

[PRESUMABLY SHE MEANS THE CHESS AND NOT THE FLIRTING.]

I'll let you have the white. It gives you the benefit of going first.

All right.

[ He immediately begins to gather up all the pieces from the floor and returns them to their starting positions on the chess board. ]

Does white always go first?

Assuming you're playing by standard rules. You can read whatever meaning you like into it.

[She snags a handful herself, and starts replacing them as well.]

But really, it's a custom that developed mostly to make the annotation of games standardized. In the beginning, either black or white could go first; it wasn't until the mid-1800s or so that the movement to have white always move first really began.

[ He retrieves a white rook from under the couch. ]

Do you travel a lot, Carmen-san? You mentioned visiting Japan.

Oh, I've always been a traveler. It's usually for work reasons; the first time I went to Japan, it was because I was working on a case. My partner and I spent a few days there — we had the opportunity to go to a tea ceremony and see a few of the sights, in between tracking down an antiquities thief.

[A memory that makes her smile, unbidden. Those were good times, weren't they.]
