...well!!]
You obviously caught me off guard! Don't go getting used to it, now.
[Especially not if you keep teasing her about her coffee problem, you!]
As for questions.....hmm. Am I allowed to come to you if I have any medical problems?
[Not that...she would, but it can't hurt to ask....]
no subject
[As for the question, well...as Emmy reads Rideaux's response, she can probably imagine the look he had on his face as he wrote it. Or hey, maybe he's sincere this time!]
Of course you are. What sort of doctor would I be to refuse a patient?
[He'll kindly leave out the, "You had better hope you can pay for it after the fact, though." That'll be Emmy's little surprise should she ever actually have to come to him for treatment.]
no subject
...
...maybe she'll just ensure she doesn't fall ill.]
I suppose there have to be some perks to having a doctor as a friend!
[That message is sent off before she has a chance to think about it; oh dear, she said the 'f' word...that wasn't...!
...well surely it can't hurt that much! If they're not friends, then what are they? Admittedly it's a rather odd friendship, but she's been in worse relationships...]
no subject
Emmy might be waiting a little while for a response, as Rideaux has to seriously contemplate the use of the 'f' word there. Is that what she really thinks of their relationship as? A friendship? He would have never considered it.
Naturally, it begs the question,]
You think of me as your friend? That's taking the joke a bit far, don't you think?
[...he realizes the implications about himself displayed in those questions, but whatever.]
no subject
Well, I mean, we do clash a lot, but I do think of you like that, yes. It's just easier to default to 'friend' rather than complicate things. We do spend a bit of time together, you know.
[...]
Is that a problem...?
no subject
Rideaux's response comes a little quicker this time.]
No, I suppose it's not. I just didn't see it that way at all.
[How blunt.
He's still a bit hesitant, because keeping things on a business level is how he prefers to operate. If she wants to consider this a friendship, he's going to be on a higher alert than ever.]
Though I'm not opposed to changing my viewpoint.
no subject
You certainly don't mince words, do you? If I had thinner skin, I'd be rather offended!
[To be honest, she probably would be offended if it was anyone else, but...she's learned, by now, that Rideaux seems to march to the beat of his own drum.
Which is the nicest way of saying it.]
You can call it whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. I doubt we're going to be having sleepovers and making friendship bracelets any time soon, so you can relax.
As long as you don't consider me an enemy, I'm easy.
no subject
Who knows though, maybe "friendship" really will end up being the most applicable term for our relationship.
[Emmy should feel honored that he's taking such a risk here!!]
And no, I don't see you as an enemy. I trust you won't give me a reason to?
[There's a bit of a threat hidden behind those words- implications that can't be publicly voiced. But that doesn't only apply to their professional relationship either.
...Just what is this man's damage with friendships, good lord.]
no subject
I don't intend to make an enemy of you, no. Unless convincing you to buy me the odd coffee is enough to get me in your bad books.
[Totally joking, of course!
...maybe not about the coffee, though. Coffee is serious business, Rideaux!]
But I'm sure you can handle that.
no subject
[He actually sends just that to start for dramatic effect, then replies again not too long after.]
Jokes aside, coffee isn't out of the question, no. As long as you don't have a personal life crisis deciding what to put in it when we get there.
[HE SAID HE WAS DONE JOKING.
...maybe he's not this time, uh.]
no subject
Oh don't start! I promise I'll try to behave myself when faced with a barista, alright! Especially if you're paying.
[Of course, she'll also offer to shout from time to time! It doesn't quite feel right, otherwise. Besides, she has a feeling you might try to pull the old 'but I bought you coffee!' trick if you want something from her...best to keep things even.
Besides, that's what friends do, right? They buy coffee for each other. Take that!]
I might even let you suggest something for me. I'm sure you have good taste, after all!
no subject
[Okay, he's done for real now, he swears.]
My taste is unmatched, naturally. Give me a call when you'd like to go, and I'll order two of my particular favorite.
[It occurs to him after he sends that text, that he came into this just wanting to mess around with Emmy's apparent quest for love and ended up with a not-date coffee outing and a declaration of friendship.
What the hell even happened here? He's not quite sure if he's ready to say he's fine with this but...it's okay, he guesses.]
